Jordan, I never actually took the weight of the pineapple......I always just grabbed the largest one.

You ever consider about releasing this as a regular release since it has received such positive feedback? I'm going to jump on this band wagon and try a pineapple in an upcoming release. Not sure it will be a hoppy beer, may lower the quantity and put it in with a Belma WFM. Who knows, one thing I love about brewing my own beer. :cheers2:
Funny you mention that Keith as I plan on doing one for a summer seasonal here in NB.

Awesome!
You ever add the pine apple to the primary and not in the boil? I'm planning on a 10 gallon batch of IPA using Belma hops. Half tempted to add pineapple to one primary.

Just FYI for anyone who has this brew or another pineapple brew on his radar...

Foodland has pineapples on for $1.99 this flyer week (i.e., starting today).

It's on my radar! Just tried Spearhead today, definitely an IPA, not APA. I'll let you guys know how the scale down to one gallon goes.

I picked up a pineapple at Costco today as well.

This is what Spearhead shows in their website.

6.0% ABV
1.057 OG
60 IBU
12 SRM

Ingredients are Pale Ale malt, Munich, Carafoam, C-10, and C-45. Hops are Northern Brewer and Cascade.

I currently don't have any C-10 so I'll be subbing C-20 instead as that is the closest I have on hand. So based on that info, this is what I have loosely come up with for Monday's brew.

7 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 1 62.1 %
1 lbs 6.4 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 2 12.4 %
1 lbs 6.1 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L (20.0 SRM) Grain 3 12.2 %
12.0 oz Carafoam (2.0 SRM) Grain 4 6.6 %
12.0 oz Munich Malt (9.0 SRM) Grain 5 6.6 %
1.00 oz Northern Brewer [8.50 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 6 22.9 IBUs
1.28 oz Cascade [5.50 %] - Boil 30.0 min Hop 7 10.3 IBUs
1.00 oz Cascade [5.50 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 8 0.0 IBUs
1.00 oz Northern Brewer [8.50 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 9 0.0 IBUs
1.00 oz Cascade [5.50 %] - Boil 0.0 min Hop 10 0.0 IBUs
Shane, how far off is your recipe from this grain build? I'm going to try to adjust the Belma hop additions to match these additions with some pineapple. Wasn't sure if you made and significant changes or not.

This one is on my radar also now I have tried it. I think I'll go with your second recipe Shane and try that for a start for my next brew.

How would you guys classify this tasty ale? IPA or specialty beer?

According to the guidelines in the BJCP, I would think this would be a fruit beer, cat 20. and if not that then a cat 23, a speciality beer.

Yeah, I think fruit beer, category 20. Pinapple American Pale Ale as you always have to specify the underlying style of beer in that category.

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA

It's in that grey area where Pale Ale and IPA stats overlap so you could call it either really. I agree with Pale Ale myself.

That is quite the hops schedule Keith!

I made this today too, definitely darker than I thought it'd be.

1.059 OG
1.011 FG
56 IBU
6.2% ABV
10 SRM
0.97 IBU/OG

My measured/corrected OG came to 1.050
Actual efficiency 60%

Fermentables Efficiency: 70.0 % Batch size: 1.0 gal

Fermentable Amount Use PPG
Pale 2-Row (CA) 1.5 lb 63 % Mash 36
Caramel/Crystal 40L (US) 0.29 lb 12 % Mash 34
Caramel/Crystal 10L (US) 0.28 lb 11 % Mash 35
Munich Light (CA) 0.15 lb 6 % Mash 34
Carapils (DE) 0.15 lb 6 % Mash 35

Hops Boil time: 90 min

Hop Amount Time Use Form AA
Columbus (US) 0.1 oz 60 min Boil Pellet 17.5%
Cascade (US) 0.1 oz 30 min Boil Pellet 6.8%
Cascade (US) 0.15 oz 10 min Boil Pellet 6.8%
Columbus (US) 0.1 oz 10 min Boil Pellet 17.5%
Cascade (US) 0.15 oz 0 min Boil Pellet 6.8%
Cascade (US) 0.3 oz 7 days Dry Hop Pellet 6.8%

Yeasts

Name Lab/Product Average Attenuation
Safale US-05 Fermentis US-05 80.5%

Extras

Name Amount Time Use
Pineapple 5 oz. 15.0 min Boil
Whirlfloc Tablet 0.25 each 15.0 min Boil

Mash at 154 F for 60 min. Mash out 170 F. Batch sparge. Boil 90 min.

One issue I had/have is I had significant amounts of hop pellet grime clogging my filter/strainer. Any secrets to reducing this? Or should I just boil the hops in a bag?

You could probably get a good whirl pool going while it's racking off, would help pull all the trub to the middle.

So while I was at daves I picked up a few other yeasts to burn through the extract. I grabbed a WLP029 and after reading a bit. Do you think it would work well in this PineApple IPA? or should I just stick with the US-05?

Ditto. For this one, especially, I'd stick with a neutral yeast so as not to muddy the flavours. Already a lot going on in a pineapple pale.

My pineapple pale just came of age a couple days ago. I didn't bother cloning Spearhead. Never had it so it would be pointless for me, plus I like doing my very own thang. I just designed a solid IPA and chucked a pineapple in at 15 minutes. I think I'll aim to keep this guy on tap for the warmer months. It's a dandy summer beer.

Happy brewing, boys!

Just mashing in for my version of the Pineapple express :D

Went with 92% 2 row and 8% crystal 40 with 1 oz Cascade for bittering, 2 oz Amarillo at 15 minutes, 1 oz Citra at 5 minutes and 1 each of Amarillo and Citra for flameout with a dry hop of 1 oz each of Citra and Amarillo.
Going to use 10 oz of fresh pineapple at 15 minutes

With all of us making Pineapple IPAs/APAs they're going to have to open up a new BJCP style category!
