2016 Advent: Dec. 14th Irish Red
Recipe: Irish Red TYPE: All Grain
---RECIPE SPECIFICATIONS-------
SRM: 18.6 SRM
IBU: 25.5 IBUs
OG: 1.056 SG
FG: 1.010 SG
ABV: 5.6 %
EE%: 70.00 %
Batch: 12.00 gal
Boil: 15.8 gal

Total Grain Weight: 26 lbs 0.7 oz Total Hops: 3.25 oz oz.
---Ingredients-------
Amt Name Type %/IBU
22 lbs 8.0 oz Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 86.4 %
1 lbs Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM) Grain 3.8 %
15.0 oz Roasted Barley (300.0 SRM) Grain 3.6 %
13.0 oz Melanoiden Malt (20.0 SRM) Grain 3.1 %
13.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 3.1 %
3.25 oz East Kent Goldings (EKG) [5.50 %] - 60 min Hop 25.5 IBUs
1.0 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 10.0 mins) Fining -
Mash 153.0 F for 60 min
Fermented at 17C for about 10 days, raised to 19C for 4 days then dropped it down to .5C for 7 days for a cold crash. Kegged and force carbed. This keg sat in the fridge for about a month then it was bottled two days before the exchange.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think I went a little overboard on the roasted barley and crystal 120, the beer turned out darker than I was expecting. The first keg seemed to taste good to me though.

I enjoyed this one. I liked the chocolate/coffee flavors from the roasted barley

Re: 2016 Advent: Dec. 14th Irish Red
This was a hell of a lot darker than 18 srm. I enjoyed this and I don't normally enjoy Irish red, but then again I think this was somewhere between a red and a porter. Nice beer overall, would definitely enjoy more than one glass of it.
On tap: Hopped Mead, ESB, Schwazbier
Coming up: Altbier
Fermenting: Maibock
Planned: NEIPA, NZ Pils, Oyster Stout

Yeah it definitely turned out darker than expected. I really don't know how it happened, i picked up a pound of roasted barley and a pound of crystal 120 for the recipe from Dave. Unless something got mixed up and i ended up with a darker malt. I guess I'll find out when I make it next time.

Very dark and I had to check the date. I liked it a lot bur it may not be an Irish Red.
I would drink more of this all the same.

This beer rocked. It's gone now and I want some more, so it passed the Andrew test.

Yeah, I really liked it as well. Like the others said, it is pushing the envelop to be a red, but fine beer nonetheless. I got of delicious caramel character in there.

Drank this last night. Lots of Carmel overtones. Was delicious. Didn't really taste like an Irish red but was really good none the less

Tasty beer. Nice roast and lots of malt. Looks like a porter.

Found this bordering a porter in both color and flavor. That being said, it was still a fantastic beer. Nice roast and chocolate flavors. Thanks!
