2017 Advent - December 13th Rye IPA
December 13th - Rye IPA - Smokin Tuns
This recipe was based on Denny Conn's Wry Smile Rye IPA https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/thre ... ipa.84515/ I thought having a little smoked malt would add something different to the beer but I can't even really notice it to be honest. At 4% of the total grain bill I think it's lost in the extra dry hops and general profile of the beer. Denny's beer has an OG of 1.073 and I ended up with 1.060 which works nice. I don't usually brew that high gravity so my efficiency was off.
OG 1.060
FG 1.013
ABV 6.17%
IBU 69
Pilsner 33.8 %
Maris Otter 32.5 %
Rye Malt 16.9 %
C60 7.2 %
Smoked Malt (cherry wood) 4.0 %
Cara-Pils 2.8 %
Wheat Malt 2.8 %
Mt. Hood First Wort 60.0 min Hop 17.4 IBUs
Chinook - 60.0 min 17.2 IBUs
Nugget -60.0 min 17.2 IBUs
Mt. Hood - Boil 30.0 min 6.1 IBUs
Mt. Hood - Steep/Whirlpool 11.9 IBUs
Denny's Fav 50 - Made a starter from a yeast slurry (4th gen I think)
2.00 oz Columbus Dry Hop (5 Days)
Mash @153F for 60min
Fermented at 18c

Wow, that was really good. The slightest hint of rye spiciness, great body. The smoke was so subtle that if I didn't know it was there, I'd probably have missed it. Some nicely earthy hop action. I've never used Mt Hood for late hopping - really liked that. Wonderfully carbed too. I'd love to try this with just a bit more smoked malt.

This is very tasty and was well brewed. Clean, dried out well and I didn't look at the recipe before I tried it so I wasn't sure what that flavour was I could pick up. I thought it was papery / oxidized, just a bit, but I think now this may be the smoked malt. Not sure I'd add this if I brewed it, the recipe was great in every other way to me. Perfect carbonation, nice head stand, great clarity, nice clean, resinous hop flavour and bitterness and flavour. Love it, great job. Hops took some work to pull out of the aroma, but I am making a spicy garlic pasta sauce so it's taking over the house. I think the rye character came through nicely and the hops chosen were a great compliment to it - wood, resin, peppery. Thanks for sharing.

Actually, now that I know that flavour was the smoked malt, I'm enjoying it even more. It's warming up and showing off more hop aroma too. Nice.

Re: 2017 Advent - December 13th Rye IPA
I drank this before I saw the recipe, I picked up in the smoke malt right away. Thought it might have been some phenolic yeast issues at first, really kind of throwing things off for me. I've yet to have a smoked beer I've enjoyed though, so I guess I'm a bit sensitive to that. Other than that the beer is pretty solid, maybe a bit one dimensional with the hops, but still quite enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
On tap: Hopped Mead, ESB, Schwazbier
Coming up: Altbier
Fermenting: Maibock
Planned: NEIPA, NZ Pils, Oyster Stout

Not a fan of smokey beer, I'm surprised that I didn't pick up on that it was smoked. Makes me question my ability to identify flavors.
Now that I know what the flavor is in this that I didn't quite like I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit more I have to say that seeing a recipe makes me biased towards liking a beer more.
When I know what's gonna hit I am prepared for it and can appreciate it more.
In all other aspects I love the beer.
What John g said above nails it for my experience.
I'll add that half way through the glass im completely into it. You did a good job.
Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback glad you guys enjoyed it. I'm not sold on the smoked malt in this one.. kind of threw off my senses and got muddled with the rye. It's funny some of you found it grew on you as you got further into the glass because I had the same experience. I haven't had one since the split so I'm glad it held up.

This was good drinking. Not much to add to what has already been said. Not a fan of smokey beers, but this was quite subtle and enjoyable. Thanks!

Tasty beer! I'd probably drop the smoked malt if I were to brew it, but otherwise we liked this one a lot.

Not a fan of smoke in a beer but this was subtle enough that it was enjoyable. Would have had another. Thanks!

I do like smoked beers and this was good. I do think this beer would be better without the smoke but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks

Good job.
I with most people said : well made, don't usually like smoke but here it's a good supporting flavor. I liked it!
