I'm reading this recipe practicing in my mind what it's gonna taste like when I get home.
Just that was worth this exchange for me.

Re: 2017 Advent - Dec 5 Smoked Porter
Generally not one for smoked beers, this is quite subtle though. Melds in well with the roast character. Body is maybe a bit on the thin side, but that's my only knock against it. Nice beer, thanks for sharing
On tap: Hopped Mead, ESB, Schwazbier
Coming up: Altbier
Fermenting: Maibock
Planned: NEIPA, NZ Pils, Oyster Stout

Re: 2017 Advent - Dec 5 Smoked Porter
I am also not one for smoke in a beer. However this was subtle enough that I enjoyed it quite a bit. Reminded me of a kit I made a few years back Peat McFuggles. Just this was darker with the addition of the chocolate malt
.
One bottle was flat so we split the one that was carbed. Glass emptied too quickly.

Re: 2017 Advent - Dec 5 Smoked Porter
I poured mine a little too cold. I drink most of my beers at 6c this is about 3 right now.
Gonna let it warm up. I like the little bit of sweetness it has. The smoke is perfect for my taste good job on that.
I'm gonna wait for a full judgement when it's a little warmer cause I think there's something hidden here but right now the beer seems a little one dimensional. Almost like a smoked root beer. Albeit an extremely tasty one. The beer could almost use something to give it a fuller mouthfeel.
I use fuggles a lot and I'm not getting any of that surprising since the late addition.
I'll post back when she's warm.

Re: 2017 Advent - Dec 5 Smoked Porter
Cracked mine and I'm about half way done. I'm liking the smoke and general flavor but I think it would benefit from a better mouthfeel. I wonder how another yeast would perform. Thanks for the beer!

Yeah after some warming my opinion stands.
On second thought maybe this is exactly how a porter is supposed to taste?

Re: 2017 Advent - Dec 5 Smoked Porter
Not much to add that hasn't already been said. Nice subtle smoke, but a bit thin body for a porter. Maybe I'm unfairly and subconciously comparing it to the thick booze bomb from yesterday Mine was a little undercarbanated as well. All the same, a pleasent drink. Thanks!

Shouldn’t a Porter have a medium to light body? For me that’s a big differentiating factor from a Stout.

Re: 2017 Advent - Dec 5 Smoked Porter
Aroma has good smoke up front with an otherwise very clean ferment so I'm not getting many other aromas I'd expect, like toasty/roasty as well as some esters from the english yeast. Maybe it was fermented on the cool side making the ester production low. It's a touch sweet, maybe a bit under attenuated, which could be from a cool ferment too causing the yeast to drop out early, but I'm just guessing although at an FG of 1.012 that doesn't seem too high. I'm getting some bread crust flavors pushing through the smoke which is nice. I couldn't get a big frothy head on mine like in your untappd entry pics from your previous batch. Maybe some more carbonation would help dry it out and aid in producing a bigger foam head. I'm curious as to what type of smoked malt you used.

Re: 2017 Advent - Dec 5 Smoked Porter
Very interesting feedback. I have some responses.
1) Absolutely very thin and I don't know why. I mashed at 156F. I think next time I'll try adding some dextrin malt.
2) I very purposely carbonated low, to more suit typical British beer. Too low for my liking though. On top of that, I had a couple bottles give me some grief at capping time. I kept one of those bottles and it seemed ok, but it looks like some were not. For that I apologize.
3) I'm surprised you're finding the fermentation clean. I found the beer to be a bit rough in that area. Everyone is their own worst critic, I suppose.
Overall, I'm rather disappointed in this one. The first batch I brewed was fantastic. Also thin, but everything else was great. All I changed was extra smoked malt and extra chocolate. Next time I think I'll go back to the original amount of smoke and the increased chocolate, and the higher carbonation level.
Thanks for the feedback!

Oh, the smoked malt I used is just whatever beech malt Everwood carries. I'd love to try this with something different.

Cherrywood smoked malt might be an interesting option. Just brewed a Smoked Porter myself this past week and am already thinking about the next version.

I understand completely. The first one I did turned out so well that I had to do it again. Sadly, it didn't turn out nearly as well. Definitely going to try again, though.

This is definitely a beer I would keep around and work on to perfect.
I haven't done any work on stouts or porters. Just brewed one-offs and moved on. The only stouts I like are Imperial so perhaps it's not my style.
Thanks for the beer!

Really enjoyed this porter. I don't usually like smoke in a beer but, the smoke flavour was light and enjoyable!
Fuggles worked well, nice hop. . Nice job! Thanks.

I liked it, I thought the smoke worked in well with the caramel. The body was definitely lighter than I would have expected for 1.012, but it was an easy drinking beer.

I’m right in line with everyone else here. Light smoke and thin. Enjoyable, thanks.

Played some catch up last night... Thought this was very tasty! It came through a bit thin after drinking the huge beer from Dec 4, but I really liked the combination of malt and smoke.

Indeed, the beer is thin, but yeah, anything would appear extra thin after that imperial stout behemoth.

Re: 2017 Advent - Dec 5 Smoked Porter
I'm way behind in my drinking. Fun to read the comments after tasting. Pretty much spot on with my thoughts. A bit thin in the body (no head at all in mine...which is fine). Thought the alcohol level was going to be a bit higher than 5%. My personal preference would be more chocolate malt and less brown malt....but then that would be a different beer! Overall still enjoyed it!
