2017 Decembeer Exchange - Dec. 26 - Dusseldorf Altbier (Alt Nation)

Post by Lisa J » Thu Dec 21, 2017 12:51 pm

21 litre batch
OG 1.052
FG 1.015
ABV 5%

Mash Temp 156F

3.71 kg Pilsner (2 Row) 68.5 %
0.76 kg Munich Malt 14.0 %
0.54 kg Aromatic Malt 10.0 %
0.27 kg Caramunich Malt 4 5.0 %
0.14 kg Chocolate Malt 5 2.5 %

28.00 g Magnum [14.2 %] - Boil 60.0 min 40.6 IBUs
28.00 g Hallertau [6.4 %] - Boil 15.0 min 6.5 IBUs

1 pkg US-05 Yeast

Fermented at 16C for 10 days. Increased to 21C for 6 days. Cold crashed 1 week. Carbonated in keg and bottled Nov 25th. (Learned a huge lesson about doing this - will bottle condition next time. Very concerned about oxidization. Hoping some of you had a chance to try the keg on tap on Exchange Day...)

Good news! Mine was capped properly and was fully carbonated and not oxidized. So, I'm hoping that it was representative of the rest of them. I wish I could remember more drinking notes than that. I remember liking it. I think the bitterness was on the high end for the style, but that's how I always brew it too.

Mine was decent too, with good capping and carbonation. I think I detected some carbonic acid character, maybe a result of the high carbonation. Did you force carb this quickly before bottling? I could be off. Just speaking from experience because I've had this in some of my beers in the past.

I liked the bitterness and it's also something I do with my altbiers too.

Anyway, I enjoyed this one. Cheers.

No problems with mine either. It matched well with the sample I tried at the exchange. Thanks!

Mine was well carbed. Great beer. Not familiar with the style but that did not stop me from enjoying it. :)

My bottle was carbed just fine. Nice colour. Perhaps a bit too bitter for the style. Overall, very nicely done.
