ESB recipe?

Post by CorneliusAlphonse » Fri Nov 18, 2011 5:59 pm

Anyone have a tried-n-true extra special bitter recipe (preferably with a bit more than usual late hopping)?

I'm planning on doing a split 5 or 6 gallon batch on my stove. I'll do one mash, mix up the mash n sparge water, and split into two pots. I'll do one with EKG hop schedule, and the other with those bramling cross hops i still have floating around. really get a feel for the taste of them.

so yeah, looking for a recipe, if anyone has one!

Good man.;)

I believe you can get all of those ingredients (with the exception of Halcyon) at NG if you don't already have them on hand. I think the BC in this would be great. I've got a brown porter on deck with 1469, and if it turns out good, I'm going to use it on a an English IPA - all BC.

just going to give this a try this weekend... exams and christmas break messed up my brewing schedule. Subbing MO for Halcyon. Haven't decided on a yeast yet, it'll have to be one from noble grape. any suggestions? nottingham, windsor? wyeast 1098 or 1968 (if they have either)?

Nottingham, or those other 2 would be fine.

I feel like a fool right now, but what is "BC"?

bramling cross - type of hops we got about a year back. im doing a split batch, with half EKG and the other half BC.

Fermcap goddamit. BNers need to get with the times on that one. It's the bomb. I'll see what I can find for you for next brew.

i know i know. I would love some, though, just as a stress reducer.

Boilover is not being an issue after all... the steam is a bigger problem. i usually brew at my sister's house outside, on a propane burner with a much bigger pot.

I will definitely be getting some of this... I wasn't even aware of it... I was using a spray bottle and constantly spritzing the top of the keggle as the foam started to threaten the boilover... it did work but was damn close... first time ... boil over.. second time.. saved it... .. my keg is just over 50L or 13 gal... bit tight with the 10 gallon batches... it's right at the top...

thx for the tip.

Welp, Guess I won't know the ABV on this one. I didn't bother taking a hydrometer sample, and the beer is too shallow in the carboys to put in a hydrometer (split batch). The preboil OG was what I was aiming for post-boil though, so I guess your mill did improve my efficiency some, MrX.

That's just how Nash and Bobby Z invented the Imperial ESB.

Bottled the bramling cross half of this batch yesterday... Had a taste and realized I didn't dry hop. whoops. So i threw some EKG in the other half of the batch, and i'll bottle it in a week or two
