December 18, 2018 - Rye PA
All Rye'lled Up
BJCP Style Guide 18B? - Rye Pale Ale
Batch size 21 L
Boil time 60 min
Equipment: Robobrew - Version III
OG: 1.052
Est. FG:
Est. ABV: 5.5 %
Grain
4.26 kg - Pale Malt (2 - Row) - 71.2%
0.30KG - Victory Malt - 5%
0.60 kg - Rye Malt - 10%
0.60 kg - Munich Malt - 10 %
0.22 kg - Honey Malt - 3.7%
Rice hulls - 3 - 4 handfuls
Heat 21.21 L of water to strike temp of 71.4 C and then add grains to maintain a mash temp of 66.7 C for 75 mins. Mash out to 75.6 C over 10 mins.
Recirculate gently throughout mash
Sprage with 12.80 L of cold water
Collect 28 liters of wort
Bring to Boil and Address:
14 g Simcoe (13% aa) - boil for 60 mins
14 g Simcoe (13% aa) - Boil for 30 mins
14 g Centennial (10% aa) - Boil for 20 mins
Whirlflock added 15 mins
14 g Centennial (10% aa) - Boil for 10
17 g Cascade (5.50% aa) - Boil for 5
Cool to pitching temp
Oxygenate wort and pitch yeast starter of San Diego Super Yeast(WLP090) and ferment for 14 days at 18C
Dry hop additions:
Add
35 g of Amarillo (9.1% aa) on day 5 of fermentation
Will Bottle Condition as per recommendation. Usually would keg and carb. I would wait until the 16th to put in the fridge. Was a little late getting the brew done due to my electric system crapping out and have to re-do the brew a week later. Should be nice and carbed up by then, but better safe than sorry.
Hope everyone likes it, first year doing this and bottle conditioning this beer. It's been a hit on keg in my house.
Enjoy!

Re: December 18, 2018 - Rye PA
I get a little bit of rye spiciness on the nose, along with some other malt notes and a bit of American hop character. The body is fine for the ABV, with the malt and hops in good balance. This is an easy drinker that's nicely carbonated. I would personally have liked a little more rye spiciness, but already know I like rye in beer more than most. Cheers!

I enjoyed it. Little spicy with some hops coming through. Easy drinking.
Like Mumble I would like a little more rye but I like them spicy. Thanks for the beer!

Reminds me of terrapin rye pale ale from the states. Easy drinking beer! Very enjoyable

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Nice beer. Well carbed, nice fruity hops on the nose. Pleasant level of rye spiciness. I really enjoy the level of bitterness in this one. As everyone else said, easy drinking, thanks!

Nice bready malt flavor. Compliments the rye nicely. And just enough rye to ok know it's there but not drown out the other malts. Thanks Paul!

Thanks for the comments guys. I actually had a bottle today that had some slight oxidization so I am glad you didn’t get one of those. I am brewing this again tomorrow with some adjustments thanks to your input. Cheers!

Great label, great beer! Finally got around to drinking this on Sunday while brewing our Boxing Rock entry. I agree with others - this is the perfect amount of rye. I have a bag of rye malt in storage that I plan to use soon -- will definitely take some inspiration from your recipe. Thanks for sharing!

I wish I had some left while I brewed for the boxing rock this past weekend. I brewed this again but upped the Rye to 18% and it was really really good. Some friends found it too spicy though so I think I'll bump the rye down to 14% and brew it again next weekend. Happy Medium from too spicy and not spicy enough. Thanks for the feedback!GCR wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 9:42 amGreat label, great beer! Finally got around to drinking this on Sunday while brewing our Boxing Rock entry.
