Sorry I'm just getting this in under the wire. I was out of town until this morning.

This is a Belgian Dubbel, but it came in lower gravity, and lighter colour than I had hoped, so I'm interested to hear your thoughts so I'll know if I should enter it in Big Spruce or go to my backup.

OG 1.056
FG 1.011
ABV 6%

3.5kg pilsner
2.25kg munich
400g caramunich

60 minute mash at 66.5C

60 minute boil
1oz tettnang 60 minutes
10z tettnang 30 minutes
500g table sugar 15 minutes

Mangrove Jack Belgian Abbey yeast

Tim, You can’t put a comp beer into an exchange with judges participating!!

(Apparently you can )

For that reason, I ain’t saying anything beyond thanks for the share!!

Lol I was joking. I brewed a super secret recipe for the comp.

Good! In that case: lots of banana and bready malt on the nose and also the palate. Less clove than I like, but still within style, I think. I thought the color was fine and the sweetness level too. Hops where they should be, almost absent. But mid- to late-palate I found it a little bit on the dry side. Do you feel the same? If so, do you attribute that to the gravity coming in low or the yeast? I picked up some of that yeast to make a dubbel after the comp is over and I’m wondering if I should maybe seek out a liquid option.

Edit: I have the Lallemand Belgian Abbaye. Still, though, probably similar strains (if you believe the Internet…)

Nice brew! I agree on the banana and also thought I noticed some plum and just hint of spice.

This is the first dubbel I've tried with that yeast... not too shabby! I've been pretty pleased with Mangrove Jack's tripel, cider and mead yeasts... (the cider in particular I enjoy).

Head did not stick around much for me, but mouthfeel was good, and flavours were balanced. Thanks for the beer, and good luck in the competition!Image
