Post by mr x » Sat Feb 09, 2013 1:37 pm

Just in the planning stages. Anybody know what NG is stocking for Wyeast lagers?

Also, they will special order Wyeast and it comes in really quick; I think they order every 3 weeks or so. I recently ordered the seasonal Munich Lager II and I had it inside 2 weeks.

Now this thread intrigues me a great deal. Amarillo is by far my favourite hop, but I've never used it in a lager. Definitely subscribed to this thread. Any recipe details, X?

Probably throw it together tomorrow at work. Nothing too crazy though. Likely 3 grains max. Maybe a small bit of flaked corn.

I did an all citra IPA with WLP 802 Czech lager and it turned out well, needed a lot of time to lager until it smoothed out right. Had some sulfurish notes prior to settling out.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Probably go this route again. Might mix in some cascade too.

Jesus, X, that's a lot of flaked maise. Only bit of colour in that must have come from the hops.

Well, the lager part was an epic failure. Pitched Saturday at dinner, and still no action. Said fuck it, jacked up the temp and threw in some -05. 1272 is rocking nicely at 62f.

After that fiasco, I just kegged it up, and the lager drama turned out pretty damn tasty. Finished at 1.009. 1272 coming up.

hmmmmmmmm...the 1272 finished at the same gravity, but it's not quite as smooth, almost seems a touch cranky, but still pretty damn good.

I may give this a whirl next week. Thinking of splitting it 5 Gal on S-23 and 5 Gal on WLP830-German Lager
Kegged: El Dorado IPA, Rocketfuel 2.0, Wet Hopped Pale, Ryrish Red, Marzen, BN Exchange Dunkel, BN Exchange NEIPA, Lies Lies Lies - Citra <0.5% ale
Fermenting: NZ Pilsner with Enigma, Strawberry brett cider

Just getting into this now. I'm happy with it, could have been a bit better two months ago, lol. But it's great as a summer beer, although I might knock the abv down 1%.

Planning a variation of this recipe for this weekend. Likely going to mix some Cascade in along with Amarillo and subbing in either 2-row or Pale malt for the Pils. Targeting around 5% ABV. Fermenting with US-05 around 60ºF (first run with the new conical). Need to start getting some easy drinking stuff ready for poolside this summer.
