2015 Decembeer Exchange - Lame Brain IPA

Post by mstead » Mon Oct 26, 2015 12:07 am

This recipe is based off a 3 Floyds Brewing Co's -- Zombie Dust Pale Ale clone.

I based this recipe off of one I found in the Beer Smith recipe database. After making the beersmith version, I wanted it a little more bitter so I upped the bittering charge from 0.5 to 1oz. Doing so I pushed the IBUs outside of the actual IPA category but whatever. :)

I've never had the real thing, but I really like this recipe.

Batch Size (fermenter): 20.82 l
Bottling Volume: 20.82 l
Estimated OG: 1.068 SG
Estimated Color: 8.1 SRM
Estimated IBU: 81.6 IBUs

5380.00 g Canadian 2 row 79.8 %
680.40 g Munich Malt 10.1 %
226.80 g Carapils 3.4 %
226.80 g Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L 3.4 %
226.80 g Melanoiden Malt 3.4 %

1 oz Citra [13.10 %] - First Wort 60.0 min 19.8 IBUs
1 oz Citra [13.10 %] - Boil 20.0 min 21.8 IBUs
1 oz Citra [13.10 %] - Boil 10.0 min 13.0 IBUs
1 oz Citra [13.10 %] - Boil 5.0 min 7.2 IBUs
1 oz Citra [13.10 %] - Boil 0.0 min 0.0 IBUs
3 oz Citra [13.10 %] - Dry Hop 7.0 Days 0.0 IBUs

English Ale (White Labs #WLP002) Yeast

Mash @ 154F.
Boil Time: 60 Minutes

Cheated and drinking this tonight after soccer watching Sunday Night football. I love it. Nice and hoppy. Smooth bitterness and smells real nice. This is my preferred style

Deadly brew Mike.

I didn't think I was much of a fan of Citra, but wow, wow, wow. This was really fantastic. Amazing thick, fluffy head that lasted all the way to the bottom of the glass, leaving tons of lacing. I didn't really taste much of the malt profile. Or, rather, I didn't notice much of it. No matter, though - I could easily destroy a keg of this.

Yeah, this is outstanding. Calculated IBUs might be off the chart, but the actual impression isn't (at least to my relatively untrained palate). Maybe a touch more malty would be nice but I would happily drink lots of this as it is without any complaint whatsoever. Thanks!

Great golden amber colour. Head dissipated pretty quickly. Smells great. The aroma's promises are kept with lots of citrus/tropical fruit flavours with a pleasant malt base. I have never tried the Zombie Dust but this is one very drinkable beer for me.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Man, I love me some Citra. Great aroma and flavour, and the bitterness is right on for my tastes. At first I was thinking could use a little more malt backbone, but as I drink more of it, I'm not sure id change anything
Kegged:
Bottled: Chocolate Orange Stout, Barkshack Sparkling Ginger Mead, Cherry Berliner
Fermenting: Fruit (havent decided yet) Lambic
Considering: Imperial Chocolate Raspberry Stout, Fir Tip Ale

I'm enjoying this now. I'll be honest - I'm not a huge fan of citra. That said, I think it's a well made beer, I like the round malt background, I think the sweeter malt goes well with the fruitiness from the hops.

Great job on the beer. Just the right amount of bitterness for me. Love that Citra.

Great job with this beer. I was brewing a Black IPA with McKay75 earlier and we both enjoyed it. I found it had more hop flavour than bitterness but was perfect. You nailed it! Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Glad you enjoyed the brew! Right now this is my favorite beer to brew and the keg always seems to empty very quickly.

Not much more I can add that is not already said. Loved the big hop flavour, that's one big load of citra in there!

I'm behind schedule on the Advents, so sharing a few tonight with Erin. She doesn't like hops so I get this one to myself and I have to say it's a great beer Mike. Wicked tasty. Wish I had a dozen more, could drink this all night.
