Attempt at my own IPA -- Thoughts On This Recipe?

I want to start brewing my own recipes and figured I'd give my first IPA a shot. Anyone care to critique it?

I haven't used Simcoe much but I have some in my freezer that I wanna try out. Is it best used late or for bittering? I'm also wondering about dry hopping with it. I've read that too much and you get more of a cat piss aroma which I'd like to avoid.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Very solid recipe. What mash temp? IMO one change move that 20 Min addition to 5 or less and add 2-3oz carapils and maybe some dextrose depending on mash temp.

Was planning on mashing at 150F and boiling for 90 min.

If you want a dry beer lower to 149, add the 2-3oz carapils and 4-6oz dextrose. Bit either way it will be solid

Looks decent to me. I'd leave out the carapils and dextrose though.

Move your hop additions to flameout, other than your 60 min and dry hops

I'd leave out the dextrose and carapils too, they seem a bit redundant. I think for the hops, do what you want. I've brewed with earlier hop additions and with only flame out and dry hopping. You get different results, it's worth trying different times. If it was me though, I'd keep the first wort hopping, I like the results from that.

I've done a similar hop schedule (minus the 20mins) a few times and I was quite happy with the results. I did 2oz at 10,5,0 and dry. I'm definitely going to try adding them all at flame-out next time to get an idea of the difference. I've been reading a lot about how the late hop additions loose a lot of their punch with just a short boil.

Awesome. Thanks for the tips all! I'll post again with what I end up doing.

Reminds me of an ipa I do http://www.brewnosers.org/forums/viewto ... tably+numb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It'll be tasty with the grain bill as is :cheers:

Ha look at that! wow! :)

Reading your thread, it sounds like folks really liked the grain bill and the beer! Perhaps I won't change a thing. Think I should up the mash temp from 150 to 154?

That's a preference. The lower the drier but I enjoy the balance in mine. Might go lower on yours as it has more late hops so less bitterness

the dextrose and carapils together is a trick some people use for large ipas if their mash tun isn't large enough to do all malt.
