Serving PSI

I am currently serving at 12psi which seems pretty much perfect. The first pour of the night is quite foamy, probably due to the keezer having a tower but following pours seem ok. What is everyone doing for serving PSI as an average? I understand different beers benefit from different PSIs but with a three tap tower and one CO2 tank I have to average it out.

If I keep it at 12, does that continue to carbonate what is in the keg? Will that not over-carbonate the beer eventually?

12 psi is good for most beer styles - should not overcarb your beer.

Personally, on my set-up with picnic taps, I find 12 psi a bit too much for serving - I get too much foam - so I usually dial it down to about 10 or so once I get to my desired CO2 level.

Higher pressure will carbonate the beer more quickly. Once the beer is carbonated, if you then drop the pressure, the carbonation level of the beer will drop also. It's an equilibrium thing. The amount of CO2 dissolved in the beer (the carbonation level) is determined by the temperature of the beer and the pressure of CO2 applied. It takes time for that equilibrium to be reached.

12.5psi at 4C with 10 foot beer lines seems to be perfect for me.

I use 8 PSI with 6 foot lines.

I'm set up mostly so I can have good results bottling with Blichmann gun these days. Pressure varies according to the beer, but most often 2C (so the beer clears quicker) and 12 PSI.

Trevor, I personally fill bottles around 4 psi using the beer gun. Reduces foaming. Takes a bit longer but I find it works best IMO.

I see how it goes. I more often than not drop it down to 11 or 10 psi once I have started and find it goes better then. I tune the pressure within the 10 - 12 range so I cap on foam without spilling over whilst capping.

This is a good guide for balancing your draft lines. It's always nice if you can just put in enough line to allow you to dial things in to serving pressure = carbonating pressure.

I guess I have to take height into consideration. So from the middle of the keg to the tap. So that is probably two feet. So if I add 1 psi (0.5 per foot of height) to my 12, then 13psi at 2C should yield a pretty good result.

Does that sound right?

Depends on your tubing diameter/manufacturer of the tubing (though I think the guidelines in that doc I posted are pretty well standard).
