Natural gas burner

Post by Broob » Sat Jun 15, 2013 5:22 pm

Sorry is this has been covered before but does anyone know of a turkey fryer style burner that uses natural gas? Something local or online? Ive got a natural gas hook up on the outside of my house and it would be ideal if I could use it for a burner. Thanks.

There is one of those multi nozzle burners that is made for NG. Iirc, one of our vendors might be carrying them.

Cool. No sign of that in their website. I'll have to take a look.

It's a great burner, i've got a propane one. The only thing with it is you should raise the burner up to get it closer to the kettle as it is quite far away. Easy fix though.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Yup, what he said. I've raised mine up as well. Though be warned, that is propane.. not natural gas.

How fast can you get 6-8 gallons boiling?

from mash temp 152ish +/- 20mins. I've never really timed it since it was quick enough for me.

Sweet, that settles it then. I can convert it to natural gas some time down the road.

I think I read that you can swap the propane element out for one like you posted and then rig up some type of valve/ regulator.

For the folks with the red burner pictured above. Are you able to crank the regulator up to max? I find I can only go so high before the flames starts 'detaching' itself from the burner, essentially going out at some of the locations. Is this something I need to make an adjustment for (I've attempted to adjust the air inlet but that doesn't seem to prevent the flames from going out locally).

Bump for my high-jacked post... wondering if I'll be able to do 10 gallon batches in a reasonable amount of time with this 'red frame' burner.

From what my burner manual said the flame can jump/elevate when there is too much air in the mix. Maybe adjust your air down a bit, if you can.

My manual said the cheap bastard needs to spend some of those Alberta petro-dollars on a new burner. And get an avatar for christsakes, you've been a member since 2011....

I'm spending those petro-$$ on an electric setup.. just figure I won't have it all geared up very quickly and wouldn't mind doing a couple double batches in the meantime.

You are correct, I should get an avatar.. I'll sort through looking for something funny.

Any idea where to buy a replacement hose and regulator for one of those burners or similar, locally? I have an older hose with cracks and I don't trust the integrity.

I asked Nash this on Saturday and he is sure there is but can't tell me where. I'm guessing Burnside.

Mine is propane and I assume it's the same material.
