Re: Switching to all grain
Correct. Collected first runnings in a bucket, did a fly sparge. Efficiency wasnt great, probably went too fast and had channeling. As opposed to when I do biab, my efficiency is crappy and I can't do anything about it

Re: Switching to all grain
Thanks, now for a burner. I saw this online http://www.amazon.ca/Bayou-Classic-KAB4 ... you+burner" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; from the reviews and comments I saw this is a real beast. Would this be required for a 19G brew kettle of it's an overkill?

Definitely not overkill, and it's a great burner.donking wrote:Thanks, now for a burner. OBK sells it for a bit cheaper, too:

Re: Switching to all grain
That Burner works great for 10 gal batches. My only complain is a lack of a wind screen which I need to build for mine.

Re: Switching to all grain
You can't go wrong with a more powerful burner. To me, I'd invest in whatever one you can afford/are willing to buy.donking wrote:Or this one? http://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/KAB6_Bay ... p/kab6.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; hehe, 210 000 btus

Re: Switching to all grain
Probably worth it if it allows me to save around 30 mins of time per batch for just an extra 25$.

Re: Switching to all grain
alright thanks guys, I think I made my choice for burner. Now for grain mill, I'm just looking for something half descent I could use easily use my drill with. Is that a good deal http://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/OBKrushe ... rusher.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or do you guys have other suggestions?

Re: Switching to all grain
Looks very similar to the "Barley Crusher", which I have. I've been happy with the barley crusher, and the reviews on OBK seem to be good for that mill.donking wrote:alright thanks guys, I think I made my choice for burner. It's a "basic" mill, 2 roller, adjustable. You can spend more, but I'm not sure how much it will benefit you in the long run TBH.

Don, Everwood has a nice mill for a good price. I have no complaints at all. Very easy to setup and works with a drill. Will be setting mine up on a motor once I get my shelving in place.

alright, now for wort chiller for 10g-15g batch. Seems like a plate chiller would be the way to go. would 30 plates be enough, or it's an overkill? I have 40 degree F tap water right now.

With a 50 foot coil I can take a 10g batch from boil to 68f in 16min...if I stir every min or so

If you go with a plate Chiller, you will need to consider some type of hop management so as not to clog the plate Chiller with hop debris.donking wrote:alright, now for wort chiller for 10g-15g batch. Bazooka is gonna clog on your pot if you brew anything happy. Grab a side pickup tube.

Yeah you need a false bottom or something if you plan to use a plate chiller. $$$

Re: Switching to all grain
Not entirely true. Side pickup tube and a whirlpool after the boil. I've done my last two batches without a hop blocker and with a plate chiller. One batch with a pound, one with a half pound of hops. No issues with plugging the plate chiller.CorneliusAlphonse wrote:Yeah you need a false bottom or something if you plan to use a plate chiller. $$$

thanks for the correction

to me plate chillers make a lot of sense for 15 gallon batch size and up, or places with warmer ground water - they seem unnecessary for 5 and 10 gallon batches, where a small, easy to clean immersion chiller works well. if you add a pump to your immersion chiller, or stir frequently, they cool just as quickly for that size. but to each their own

Re: Switching to all grain
I brew 10 gallon batches and a plate chiller/pump has cut at least 20 minutes off my brew day. Whirlpool for 15 minutes and then pump straight to the fermenter. If I'm brewing a low hop beer, skip the whirlpool and straight to the fermenter after the boil.

Re: Switching to all grain
I brewed an IPA last week,10 gallons, fifteen minutes to chill with my 25' immersion chiller, then gravity drain to fermentor. I figure 10 gallons is the break even point, where they take the same amount of time
