That's my understanding of those units.

Yup, that's how I assume that unit runs.

Yeah I have used this setup 3 or 4 times now. It works about the same as a propane burner. For my HLT I just max it out until it reaches temp, then turn it off. For Boil kettle it's on max until I reach a boil then turn it down to maintain a rolling boil. For 12 gallons on a 4500 W element it's about 2/3 of max.

Have you figured out what you're doing at the other end with the controller? any fancy PIDs or monitoring gizmos?
I'm still sourcing the washer and silicone. If I find a source are you willing to order at the same time?

The gang box was the last at Canadian Tire in New Glasgow ($12) and I grabbed the covers from home depot last time I was in the city($3). Dryer cords are 20 bucks at Central and the 10/4 wire is $2.99 per foot at home hardware.

Cool, the 1" nut was what I was thinking would be tough... I found a source I've used a couple times on ebay, shipping is free though they take a while

here's a spot for washers:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Stainless-Steel- ... 27d11373be
we'd get 25 washers but it's a low $/unit...

better than buying 1 washer for $3 and paying $25 shipping IMO

Although the nut is labeled as 1 inch as well, just watch out, maybe it's just a fucked up naming thing.

so I ordered a pack of o-rings from the ebay link and I assembled a box with the controller and some electrical PVC from central. I'm going to pull the trigger on the washers in the next couple of days. It's going to come to 16 bucks for two washers (Amazon).

I'm interested in a couple of amazon items, maybe we could do a group order? First and formost this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BP ... B000BPG4LI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; since i found out the element I have is a dud!
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

As long as X is willing to mule either way I'd be game. I think Bluenose may be in too as he's building a kettle down my way.

I wouldn't mind having a spare element on hand as well. That's the one I use BTW.

FYI, I don't use the washer in my setup. Mostly because I couldn't track one down at the time. I built my element box like the electric brewery, removed the rubber washer that comes on the element, put the element through the box, through the kettle, with an o-ring and nut on the inside. It's probably not Mr. X approved, but no leaks. :)

I'd pay the $2.75 for a washer if shipping were free, but I'd follow anyone named hot pepper daddy anywhere
