New Keezer 2014

Post by Cobalt » Wed Jul 23, 2014 8:06 pm

So heres a rundown of what I have done so far, and what I had and what I now have :)

Heres what I started with, a free chest freezer off kijiji and ugly as sin so i put wood grain mak tak on it and added a collar to get my taps, quick, easy, and cheap, could hold 8 kegs and co2
2013-08-18 19.44.40.jpg
The new chest freezer I picked up for $50 off kijiji, much smaller, will fit 4 kegs and co2 perfectly.

The stain glass work I cut and did myself, this was about 40-50 hours all said and done.

2014-03-24 10.43.39.jpg
The start of the project was building a frame to hold the chest freezer, with a window in the front to hold the stained glass project. Also notice I built a small platform with wheels so its easy to move around as well.
2014-04-13 20.35.03.jpg
And with some pine beaded board on 45 to give it a nicer look, its split in the front and matches on the sides.
2014-04-13 22.10.39.jpg
Now you can see how the stain glass fits into the project.
2014-04-14 21.01.52.jpg
I apologize for lack of photos at this point, it seems they vanished from my phone and cloud network! such an annoyance :/

So you can see the pine I did for the front and side faces, for the trim I had my heart on a wood called Paduak, its an African hardwood and its a very sexy red color and it ages till it looks like a blood mahogany. Its also in the color scheme I wanted to go with the stained glass.
2014-04-20 18.28.59.jpg
Here again, pictures gone, so nothing in detail how the lid and coffin box was done. it was just a 1/4" sheet of plywood bolted into the lid of the freezer. I went with just simple pre-finished flooring for the top and backsplash of the coffin box. I went with another smaller box frame for the coffin, with 2x4 where the taps will be. The coffin box in this picture was just a mock up made from the pine boards, to get a visual size check of how the size would look and fit.

A picture of how it all looks together without any polyurethane finish on it.

Here it is with 2 coats of high gloss poly on it.

Video link to show off the lighting I put in, it makes the stained glass really show off, and the coffin as well
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wrv65WN ... e=youtu.be" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (will be done uploading shortly)

I have left to do is get some pictures of how the lines are run into the coffin box, drill and install my perlick taps, flush cut the trim sticking out the bottom, and maybe put 1 more coat of poly on the paduak if it needs it.

Will keep this updated and done by this weekend :) - Any questions feel free to ask :)

Cheers

So heres the update from over the weekend, its now 99% complete, just need to wire in the temp controller in the back of the coffin box and then its done. But for now heres how I ran my lines and I hope this is a better way then fully insulating the box.

So my dad had some leftover pipe insulation from when he installed his heat pumps this summer, and this is supposed to be a good quality insulation from what I understand.

New thick wall bev line fits perfectly inside the pipe insulation

All 4 lines with the pipe insulation

How its fits coming out the bottom into the freezer
2014-07-24 22.27.33.jpg
How it looks going to each tap
2014-07-24 22.44.18.jpg
This is what I like about this, the pipe insulation with 4 lines, fits nice and snug in the 2" pvc, it expands and makes a nice fit/seal into the coffin box, so no cold air escapes. The beer stays cold, and even the taps get slightly chill to the touch.

My Co2, I need a small 5lber to fit on the motor hump so I can fit my 4th keg inside and be complete
2014-07-27 16.29.37.jpg
Ill show how i did my electrical for the temp controller in another post later this week when I get that finished :)

Thanks everyone for the kind words on my new Keezer, if your in the Halifax/Spryfield area, feel free to msg me if you want to come see it first hand, Im sure I can make time for a fellow brewnoser!

Cheers

That is a really beautiful looking keezer, I'd put that in my livingroom! The pipe insulation is a really good idea.

Great work, you've created a beautiful keezer. I haven't started mine yet and although the ones with raised covers are functional, I was thinking of doing a full wrap to hide the freezer. I think I may have to use some of your ideas when I make mine. I like that it has the look of a true bar.
Currently on tap:
1) Festa Brown Ale
2) Festa Pale Ale
3) Best Case Northern Lights
4) Festa Continental Pilsner

In the bucket: Empty
In the carboy: Empty

Buy yourself a 24 and you'll be happy for a weekend. Teach yourself to homebrew and you'll be happy for a lifetime. :)
