Crazy cheap thermometers

Post by FooFytr » Fri Oct 31, 2014 12:07 pm

Hey all,

I've been fiddling with a build of my fermentation box for a few months now, finally getting to the end :) I'm in the process of adding another chamber to the top of the box for my 1 gallon all-grain test batches. Although I have a Johnson Controls A419 as my temp controller, I like to be able to see the temp in each chamber at a glance. I found these little guys for under $2 !!!!!!... FREE SHIPPING TO MY DOOR!!!! I'm totally blown away by the price and quality. They have no buttons, no options, nothing at all extra .. just a nice thermometer.

Link to site:
http://goo.gl/nwZ2ES" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I got mine on another site for $2.89 (still cheap) then found them cheaper at the above link. They may take 6 weeks to arrive .. but at that price, who cares?!?!

Those are awesome. I like the description of the contents of the package, gadget. Could be anything in there.
Currently on tap:
1) Festa Brown Ale
2) Festa Pale Ale
3) Best Case Northern Lights
4) Festa Continental Pilsner

In the bucket: Empty
In the carboy: Empty

Nice, I tried to order but won't let me create an account. Would have been nice to monitor my mash temp.

"Gadget" did crack me up too :)

I'm not too sure if the probe is waterproof ... might not be the best for mash temp. I made a tape pocket on one side of bubble-foil insulation and attach that to my fermentor/carboy. I find it very accurate that way.

Check eBay for Aquarium Thermometer. I got one a couple of years back. I wouldn't put that probe into anything I was planning to consume - probably not food grade. Fish don't seem to mind though and none have any extra eyes or anything!

EDIT: eBAY link added http://goo.gl/QJ8UAm

Funny, I did a quick search for "aquarium thermometer" on eBay.ca, and the first hit is this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-LCD-Digital- ... 1e71298716" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Which looks to be the exact same product.. same pics, anyways..

I think I found the same seller on ebay as the AliExpress if you'd rather deal through Ebay. The watermark on the photo is the same and seller name is similar.
It's a little cheaper too.

I keep meaning to post this and forgetting. I managed to get 5 or so of these at $2 or $3 each and free shipping. Problem was they came with no batteries. A pack of two Energizer A76 (equivalent to an LR44) goes for like $10 at Canadian Tire. While I suspect I might be getting a slightly higher quality battery than what would have shipped from Asia, I'm not sure it justifies the price difference.

Moral of the story is to check whether batteries are included and if they're not, plan ahead to buy appropriate batteries in bulk from Amazon or somewhere else.

Check the Dollar Store for batteries ... I believe they have that size in either a pack of 3 or 5 for $1

Yeah someone here gave me that tip a year or two ago - my thermometer battery died a couple times (no auto-off) and I didn't want to spend whatever regular retail price is

Thanks for the heads up and notes about the batteries, it led me to a similar one with batteries for $2.06...priceless :cheers:
