60L plastic barrel "fermenter" from Nobel Grape

Post by steve45ca » Wed Sep 23, 2015 8:55 am

Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone is using the 60L malt extract barrels Noble Grape is selling for $20 as a fermenter and how do you use it / clean it? I bought one a while back but I've been scratching my head with how I'm going to clean it if I use it. Any thoughts?

Used one for years. Fill with water and add bleach. Empty, rinse, ferment, rinse etc.

Just don't leave bleach very long with plastic... Can also soak with pbw. Does wonders for no hassel cleaning. Then sanitize with starsan

I was concerned with PBW etching. Over night with bleach worked for me.

From what I've read pbw may etch glass but no harm to plastic.

It's food grade plastic. noble grape gets their malt extract in them. they sell them instead of trashing them. i was thinking oxyclean soak and i always use star san. i guess i'll give it a try. any tricks to opening the top other than make some sort of handle to twist it open? cheers!

Oxy and pbw are very similar. Pbw has one other ingredient. Should work great!

Don't buy them from NG. Take them for free from me!

I've been recycling these cause no one wants to take them for free! lol. I'll have a couple more available next week.

Jeez, Dave, I'm sure I can use one, but wouldn't you rather sell it to me for, say, $10?

Any idea what the dimensions are on these? Wondering if I could fit one in my fermentation chamber... If so I could pick up one of these and be able to do 10 gal batches.

And all of a sudden I can't use one anyway. All of my equipment will be up for sale this week. I'm moving to England.

Permanent-ish. I'm 57, so nothing's forever. Whenever I feel like retiring, I'll be back.

How did you find them to clean after the first use and how did you get all the beer out? Auto syphon could have been long enough was it?
