At long last...

Post by mckay75 » Fri Oct 23, 2015 10:26 am

After months of gathering items, my basement brewery is complete! Will be testing it out tomorrow or Sunday.

It looks awesome, the stainless table is a great touch, as is the range hood.

What element do you have in the heatstick?

Thanks! Running a 5500w element I picked up from Dave @ Everwood.

I currently have a 2000 W running in mine. I'm planning on moving from my 100L kettle to a single vessel brew system using a 14 gal conical. I was interested in retrofitting it with a 5500W element but i wasn't sure how it would deal with the thicker wire.

I used high temp silicon wire that I picked up on ebay and had no problem sliding through the housing at all. What wire are you using?

I'm using cable from brewhardware but its 12/2 i think so it won't run the 5500W element.

Maybe a silly question, but won't the table get really hot? Or maybe you plan to put something between the pots and the table for insulation?

I'll find out this weekend. But based on the info I found on theelectricbrewery.com, it should be fine.

Looks really nice! Do you think it will take long to get the hang of a new system and make good beer with it? I haven't changed anything for a couple of years and settled in my ways, feel at home with what I have. I'd be reluctant to upgrade or make changes, but have often thought of it.

I'm hoping not...but fully willing to take that journey for the convenience to brew inside as opposed to being outside in the cold. I'm still BIAB, just pumping to a separate kettle for the boil...so hoping a whole lot isn't going to change. Fingers crossed!

I found little difference between my finished product moving from my 10 gal to the 1 bbl. Main thing is to get your gear accurately entered into beersmith.

That's what I do. :rockin:

You can fix up a whirlpool easily with that setup.

yup...that was my plan! Using the heat stick in my boil kettle so I can still ferment in that too.

Any thoughts on cooling the kettle during fermentation if you go that route?

It's not too big to lift into that fridge next to it, so that's perfect.

No not really. My plan was to get a plate chiller eventually...but for now i'll continue to use my immersion chiller.

I didn't say that right :) ....fermentation temperature control if you ferment in the kettle? If the fridge is free you could move the kettle in there?

This is the dream
Nova Prime Taproom
Tap 1: Festa Brew Scotch Ale
Tap 2:
"Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain -
Quaintest thoughts - queerist fancies
Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

That's the fridge's sole purpose...that's my fermentation chamber!

How's that table working for you? Do you find it wobbles when your pots are full?

One brew in and all is good! There is only ever one full kettle on it at a time...so its more that sturdy enough.

Glad to hear it! We recently purchased 13 of these tables (8 ft versions) at work for our lab. With the equipment we were placing on them (fermentors), we found them very wobbly. We did find a solution though, so I was going to offer it up if you needed it.
