I find the hardest part about building a stir plate is finding a decent enclosure. I must keep VV in mind.

Craft section of Dollar Store is also good. I used a small wooden tea box, inset glass on hinged lid, $3

I built a really ghetto ass one last week. Too ugly to post it hehe, but works very well.

I use a plug-in dimmer switch with a muffin fan and have the issue. Recently switched to the monstrous stir bar that Dave sells and now it works great. Sometimes I have to crank it up all the way to get it going but then I can turn down to the correct speed.
