First BIAB

Post by Halifax_Jeff » Wed Apr 12, 2017 7:15 pm

Tried out BIAB today on a Pale Ale. My effeciency was pretty poor but I have a few reasons why I think it happened. Overall it was a really nice brew day. Loved pulling the bag, giving it a rinse and starting my boil! Will definitely do again. I had this image of having to go into Hulk mode to pull the bag but it was really easy.

Would suggest for anyone trying to get into all grain.

Nice!
Just received my new brew kettle from OBK yesterday. https://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/16_Gall ... welded.htm
Measured it up and ordered my BIAB from mashedin last night.
Gonna get a kit from Everwood and try my first AG batch next weekend, can't wait!!!
Any tips to pass along to help with my efficiency of the first batch?
Kegged: House honey wheat, Honey Brown ale.
Fermenting: West Coast IPA
On deck: Mad Elf Clone to age until Winter
In the hole:: NEIPA / Honey Wheat./ Sour season !
Kegged and aging:: RIS

Part of my problem was that I weighed out my grains and afterwards changed my recipe on beer Smith and didn't notice so I ended up with more water than I needed.

Just try it out and see how it goes! I think if my volumes were right I would have only been off by about 5 points so I was pleased. Give it a shot and you'll get beer!

I typically had 75-80% mash efficiency with BIAB - the same as I did doing a standard batch sparge.

No special instructions for obtaining that efficiency. I did full volume mash (all water & all malt in mash), no sparge, and just lifted the bag out and let it drain (didn't squeeze the bag). :cheers2:

Did you adjust your mash ph when you did BIAB?

I adjusted my water based on the volume of water I was using, my target water profile, and the beer I was brewing.

It wasn't specifically for pH though.
