Looks to me that the support is from the top. As in the legs only go out so far. I think the rope is a good idea as a safety feature.

I actually made two cuts in the end, a 30 and a 60 degree cut, which makes a 90 degree angle, so they git snug into the 90 degree mounts they fit into. I posted a picture of the ends in the DIY section. Have a look.

I plan to put a rope at the bottom of the legs going around them so that they cant split apart as wait is added. There is a lot of support from the top but you're right, a rope around the legs would be a good safety move.
