Kettle Size For 5 Gal Brews

Post by chiasson » Tue Dec 11, 2012 8:39 pm

Hi all,

My wife bought me a 10 Gal kettle for XMas. I've done some reading and I'm thinking I should have asked her to get me the 15 GAL version. What are the limitations of the 10GAl kettle with BIAB? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

15g is definitely what you would want for a 5g BIAB pot. 10g can work, but it will be pretty tight, and higher gravity brews will take some juggling. I'd suggest returning the 10g for the 15 if you can; it will make your brew day a whole lot easier.

Your other option is to go the cooler BIAB method and use your pot strictly for heating strike water and boiling. This would eliminate the size problem because for a 5g batch, the most you would have in the pot would be about 9g - less if you wanted to do a sparge...

Your advice is very much appreciated!!! The info on the big forums can be so vague and hard to decipher at times. I really appreciate the straigth forward answer from someone with experience.

At this point I'm not really interested in a multi-vessel system; it's going back. It'll be worth the hassle of mailing it back and waiting. In the end I'll have exactly what I need and won't have to worry about not having the volume to brew.

Just need a burner and a bag now. :)

Thanks again!

Jimmy sells custom made bags so you're in the right place for that as well. ;)

A 10g pot can be fine, it's all I use. My highest OG so far is 1.060, and that was the limit for full volume, but If you want to make high gravity beers you can mash with 5-6 gallons, and then top up with water before you start to boil. Before I bought my 10g pot I used to do 5 gallon batches in an 8 gallon kettle.

I know I could make it work but I'm trying to make my setup as simple as possible, at this point at least. I also like how the 15 gal pot can be incorporated into a 3 vessel system at some point that's capable of 10 gal batches. I sent er back. Thanks for all the advice.
