I tried leaving it on the pot about 6 inches away from the burner today, and it started to melt so I took it off. I like the top hat idea, I'll work on that for the next batch.

The handles tend to get in the way when making a sleeve to fit over it.
This was my solution:

Notice the velcro on the front and the spaces for the handles. This way it wraps around like a jacket. Then I made a separate hat that slides over the top.
