Did another cooler biab today.

Came home at lunch did the mash. 3 hours later when I got home from work temp only dropped by 5 F.

Ended up with 23L of apa at about 75% measured efficiency. Ended up squeezing the bag. So far using the biab + cooler seems to have a much better end result. Since the temp will stay constant I'm hoping I will get much better tasting beers. The keggle biab I struggled to keep the temp constant and often some beers ended up with phenol taste.

Saturday doing a winter warmer with my boss. Will try and take lots of video if I can as I won't be brewing at night.

The phenol taste shouldn't be due to the mash stage. That's a fermentation issue.

Jimmy, I'm probably going to continue the BIAB route and will upgrade from my paint-strainer bag hopefully in the near future with one from you guys. My only concern is that my converted cooler has a screw top lid. Any options to deal with that?

It's possible that a regular bag might work. They are so thin that the lid might be able to screw on with the bag between it. Is it a cooler like this one?

someone mentioned using dental floss for dryhopping in kegs in another thread... maybe you could tie floss around the top of your bag and string it out the lid and tie it to the handle of that cooler

Custom sized "Hop Spider" socks now available. They are made of the same material as the BIAB for maximum filtration of hop particles (soon to be offering a coarser material as well).

Hop spider socks are sized to the width & depth of your kettle and tapered to fit your spider.

Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie... Whats the price tag on these and do you have some weight on the bottom to keep it from floating to the surface during the boil? I guess I could use a SS ball bearing but I was hoping for some wire or something to keep it open... Any thoughts?

Nothing built into them. We're trying to keep the price low on these and adding anything will up the costs. I thought about stainless rod etc..but it just didn't make sense price wise. I've used one on my system and added a 1/2 stainless coupler in the bag and it was fine.

The hop spider bags are $10.

I've used Jimmy's custom made bags for a couple of batches know and love it. The handles make it easier to maneuver and there is no way in Hell I'd be able to use the bag I bought at Noble Grape when I first started for the 8kg of grains I brewed tonight (I use the old one to store hops in).

Very happy with that.

What do you do to clean it? I've rinsed it out right after use and then lit in sit in water for a couple of days. Do you put it in the washer or do anything else with it?

I just spray it off after I'm done with it and let it hang to dry.

I dump mine in the compost, give it a good rinse and hang it on the line.
