It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? In the end, it's really just the distinction of hobby vs business.
A professional brewing at home isn't a home brewer. This is getting crazier.

If the idea is to distinguish between amateur and professional brewers, then shouldn't those be the words used?
Either way, they're a brewer (because they brew as a business), but the final product is what varies (homebrew vs non homebrew). This distinction is also what would generally prevent them from entering a homebrew competition.

I'm pretty sure they would agree that if they haul out their OBK 15G pot and burner and rips out a 10G batch of IPA that they are homebrewing.
Unless it's a test batch. Than that's just a wah day.

Not until you start a nanobrewery in your basement. Then you won't be able to make homebrew ever again ...just plain old beer :(

After further consideration of this matter ...I'm joining the homebrew crusade. Homebrew has come a very long way, and people's perceptions are changing. It's your roots and it is our roots. It's where we come from, and there's no holding us back.

Here's to homebrew :cheers2:

Fun discussion though :D

Yes, some good points were made by all.

For the first time, I realized that being a homebrewer has a special status and meaning. There's a sense of pride, achievement and unity as a group. And, there's a remarkable history of achievement.

Most enlightening. ;)

In other news, we're official: Brewnosers Homebrew Competition 2015 is registered with the BJCP.

There should be a competition page on the site within a week.
Keith wrote: Would we be able to possibly offer some free samples of the great beer we produce at the Learn to brew day or would there be laws that would prevent this?
I'm also curious about this. If the seminar is free, and you're just offering a taste, is there a legal issue? Could be a problem in a bar that already holds a liquor license o bring in outside beer.

Here's my up to date list of people involved:

Before
Andrew (me) - Organizer
- Registrar

Keith - Learn To Brew Seminars

During
BJCP Judges
Tim
Jayme
Chris
Adam
Brian
Gavin
John G

Other Judges
Sandy

After

Mark - Return Scoresheets to competitors after competition via email

Not Assigned:
Mcgster st john's, anything
Jimmy non judge anything
Sandy anything,
Amartin non judge anything, accounting, money
Akr71 day of help
Jonathan noble grape help
Jon GB, help from NB via email

Next tasks:

Find venue for competition - anyone in town want to take the lead on this?
Designing a logo for the comp, and a poster we can email out. - anyone feeling artistic?
Getting the web registration ready - good job for someone who can't make it but wants to help
Start advertising to other clubs -
Search for sponsors

For those looking to help out, see anything that you'd like to tackle?

I just realized something about the 10th.. It's Mother's Day. I can probably sweet talk my mom and excuse myself not being around that day because I'm judging, but frankly I'd rather not do that if I don't have to. I would imagine at least some others involved may be in the same situation...?

Shouldn't be an issue. I was planning on judging Saturday, with Sunday available if we ran out of time. Not that I expect more beers than we can judge in one day, but the BJCP also suggests we could judge a few of the smaller flights the night before (Friday) if needed.

OK cool - I got the impression when may 9-10 was thrown out, a two day judging event was anticipated.

While I hope we get a lot of interest, I don't expect needing two full days. I figure two sessions on Saturday, maybe a short session Friday night for some of us. Sunday would really be a last resort. BOS can be done at any point afterwards.

I can start spreading the word around homebrewing forums, and homebrewing clubs elsewhere in Canada.

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA

That'd be awesome. Give me another few days to get the website ready. A pdf poster would be easiest to share around.

I think the IPA and apa categories are gonna be huge. Although I think this could goto anyone of our fine brewers. Tasted some serious homebrew last night that many commercial brewers can't beat.
