What's the rain plan for tomorrow? Looks like it's still calling for rain (just like every other event we have).

The brew day will go on rain or shine. I've got umbrellas and a tarp, and can just sit inside and watch it from the kitchen. Don't fear the rain!

Jimmy. Normally with biab u mash out by heating up the water. What r u gonna do with biab and the cooler? Any sparge at all?
I used the pot today and my evap rate was quite a bit higher at around 20%

It's from the Janets Brown Ale in BCS - I modified the recipe but the wheat malt was in the original. I'm guessing it's just in there for head retention?mr x wrote:Why the wheat malt?

No mash out, I don't think it makes that much of a difference in efficiency..we will see. I'm doing a single infusion, all the water at once. I could do a mash out but I want to keep things as simple as possible. If efficiency is bad then I'll try a mash out the next go around.sleepyjamie wrote:Jimmy. To establish gluten dominancemr x wrote:Why the wheat malt?

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I'm not sure why BCS has wheat malt in a few recipes. I stopped using it.Jimmy wrote:It's from the Janets Brown Ale in BCS - I modified the recipe but the wheat malt was in the original. I'm guessing it's just in there for head retention?mr x wrote:Why the wheat malt?

Re: Nov 3: Learn To Homebrew Day - Event Details Here
i put wheat malt in a lot of things... i like the look of the wheat kernels scatter in among the barley.

planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Re: Nov 3: Learn To Homebrew Day - Event Details Here
I think a lot of people use wheat based on the theory that wheat malt has a high protein content that should aid in head formation / retention. I often throw some in for good measure but have not compared a recipe with and without it. My non-wheat recipes seem to have just as good head retention so who knows.

Re: Nov 3: Learn To Homebrew Day - Event Details Here
I have never had head retention issues in any beer I brewed without wheat. I think it's daft to be adding it to non wheat beers for that purpose alone.
