Hoptoberfest 2016

Post by KMcK » Fri Jul 15, 2016 12:50 am

Sign up spreadsheet (added August 15, 2016)

Poll is closed. Date is October 15, 2016. Location is west end Halifax. E-mail me if you don't know where.

We started talking about this at the HRM meeting this week and decided that it's not too early to start planning. I am willing to host but will defer to anyone else in a central location who prefers to host. Once we agree upon a location I'll add a poll with dates that the host is capable of accommodating. We also need some volunteers to help with the organization as there are many tasks to undertake. Check out previous years' threads on the topic if you want to know more.

October 1 is the perfect date for this year! Let's start a spreadsheet and get it on the go!

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Looks like I'll be missing this year again. Baby #3 is due to arrive any time now so beer related activities will be taking a back seat for a bit.

I've added a sign up spreadsheet (link at top of thread). We also need volunteers to take charge of:
ice
buns
sausages
promotion
sponsorship

October 1 is best for me, but don't take my vote too seriously. We just had a baby last week, so I'm looking more at a drop in for an hour or two, if that.

I just thought I'd bump this to say its go time to brew what you want to bring for this. I just brewed an all-citra IPA using a zombie dust clone recipe I found that might be my contribution, or I may go another direction... I figure I have one/one-and-a-half more week(s) to decide since I keg.

Oct 1 is what I'm into as well, and mumble and I "helped" LD brew up something fun a couple of weeks ago, which will be tasting nice by then.

I'm likely not available Oct. 1 so another host will need to be found if it's that date.

If this is going to happen on the 1st we need a venue soon if Kyle is unable to host that day. Anyone somewhat centrally located willing/able to host?

We can't let hoppy-fest die! X)

We're far from central, sadly - in Hammonds Plains. I'm not seeing a lot of movement on this, so wondering if it's likely to happen? (Selfishly trying to schedule a couple of other things...)
On Tap at The Frisky Lemur Pub: Pumpkin Spice Ale; Frisky Lemur IPA; ESB; CranApple Cider; RazBerliner
Fermenting/Conditioning/Bottled: Joyeux Noel Holiday Spiced Ale; NEIPA
On Deck: Altbier; NEIPA; Oatmeal Stout

We might have to consider bumping it back a week or two into October. October 8 is before Thanksgiving, so I expect some people will be busy with family obligations, or at least would prefer not to be hungover, but given that it's an outdoor event we wouldn't want to push it back too far. I don't think moving it forward would work well, since there's still planning to do.

So maybe the 15th? That work for you Kyle? That's probably as late as we should go. We did late October once and it was mighty cold.
