Hoptoberfest wrap-up

Post by mr x » Sat Aug 27, 2011 1:48 pm

OK, let's start getting names down, so we can make sure we can afford what we want to do. I would like to see some of the lurkers speak up here, great way to meet some beer geeks and have a great feast. All welcome (no pedophiles).

X, Shelley
Nash
Johnnymac
Kyle
Chalmers
Larry Erskine
Derek, Marta
Tim, Crystal

I'll be there and Crystal will probably be there later in the evening.

I'll have 1 keg and I was thinking of making some chili.

Very good Tim. What do you think about tackling Nash's beans recipe? It's pretty foolproof. I think we might be maxed on 'meat', lol.

Myself (and possibly Mrs. Ratchet if I can talk her into it) will be coming.

I have no issues cooking up the beans if Tim doesn't want to, as I won't have anything kegged-up at the time to contribute.

Please put EZ and I down as attending.
I'll bring a keg of ... something. Probably an IPA. Might be enough time for a wet hop beer from my harvest yesterday.

It might work out that people who bring kegs of beer don't bring food (for the most part), as there will be some folks showing up without beer, but who still want to contribute.

I won't be able to confirm attendance until mid-September, and quantity/type of beer until around the same time. As I'll be coming from Saint John, food prep may be tough. I may just end up paying whatever the desired price is, unless it goes into "Seaport Beerfest" cost range.
Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.

I am firmly committed to keeping the price at $15 or less to make sure that we get good attendance. I am hoping that by keeping high quality and good portions on fewer dishes, it will encourage BN's and guests. Even 30 people at $10 might be close, 40 would be great.

I'll be bringing a keg of India Red Ale. For food I'll try to make Mexican rice with the hot peppers and onions from my garden (assuming that Irene doesn't get them).

I'm in! Likely won't have a chance to brew anything though. I can order corn through my CSA if they still have some by then.

Shawna and I are planning on attending. We plan on bringing beer and an appetizer.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I would have loved to participate in this but regretfully I'm in the Cape that weekend. I hope to make it out to a meeting soon to meet some of you. I'm just learning the fine arts of brewing but am massively inspired by the discussions and the wealth of knowledge here.
Kegged: El Dorado IPA, Rocketfuel 2.0, Wet Hopped Pale, Ryrish Red, Marzen, BN Exchange Dunkel, BN Exchange NEIPA, Lies Lies Lies - Citra <0.5% ale
Fermenting: NZ Pilsner with Enigma, Strawberry brett cider

I wish I was able to make it as well. A summer's worth of fun and helping family with building/renovation projects has meant that everything I've intended to get done around here has been pushed aside. After this coming long weekend I'll be spending the rest of the warm ones tending to my own outdoor projects before the cold hits (and of course trying to find some time to brew once or twice).

I would like to go, my girl might come with me. She is veggie, and slightly shy, so it a hard sell to bring her to a BBQ with strangers. She is currently on the fence. I don't think I will have any kegs worth bringing ready by then, but if I do I will bring them. If not I'll happily pay. As for food, are deserts covered? It's almost pie season. I can cook anything/bring anything if people have other ideas.

I'm not sure we'll have many vegetarian dishes, but you are both more than welcome to attend. I don't think we'll have to worry about money for the most part. I like pies.

If she's a bit shy, don't worry, we are very friendly, but not overly so. No serial huggers or creeps. And remember most of us will be bringing our better halfs and/or kids, so it won't just be a bunch of drunk dudes. Drunk chicks and kids too! ;)
I don't think desserts have been discussed, but a pie of some sort sounds great to me! Besides the veggie sides, we could organize a BBQ of some veggies. Did you see Nash's portobello burger in the food thread?? I would even consider eating a veggie or two if they looked that good!
Hope she decides to come along. Honestly, the more the merrier.
And don't sweat the no beer thing. With no suckling pig on the go, we are not going to charge anything for people to come out. I got a bit too carried away talking about cash earlier: we'd prefer more bodies instead of charging an entrance fee. Spreading the love.

It wasn't just the money issue on the pig, there were going to be logistics issues. I hope that it will be done in the future if there is interest, but as a different event.

I hope to make it to the event, I won't know for sure though. Life is pretty fluid for me with Mason at my side.
