Due to poor planning, we're leaving to drive to Ontario early Saturday morning. I could make the Friday night session, but that seems like a bad idea.

I am heading to the Saturday Evening tasting. After reading the posts on the Rock Bottom forum, it sounds like it should be a good night! Hopefully the rain holds off.

Photos from beerfest - had better times there, the outdoor venue is definitely better as it cuts down on the BO big time!

Anybody else go down? Anything really great there?

Nothing really stood out for me other than the sour rye that premier was pouring. Some of the stuff from Maine was good, never ventured into the Quebec areas.

You missed out by avoiding Quebec. Most of my faves were from there. Some nice Saisons from a couple of breweries. I liked Spearhead's Belgium stout quite a bit.

Belgium stout? Like an imperial stout?

Reads like a lighter version of Stone's Epic 999.

The standout for me was the Saison from Les Brasseurs du Temps, a Gatineau-based brewpub. That said, I avoided anything I'd had before, and I went on a complete whim so I didn't have a plan of attack. I had a few sours, though they were branded as "stouts" and "pale ales" so I'm not sure what to think of that.

I had a some enjoyable drinks from Geary's and liked the stout from Trouble Brewing. There was an absinthe-enhanced stout from Brasseurs de Montreal which was memorable, but awful. The woman pouring it overpoured dramatically and I wasn't in the mood to drink a full glass of any of the beers, let alone a 9% liquorice bomb.

I also had my first taste of boxing rock. I'm pretty sure it was the pale. All I remember is that I turned to my friend and noted how thin and unremarkable the beer was.

Very good.

What happened to your Sappyfest review? :chug:

Did anyone volunteer this year?

Was I supposed to review that too?!

I didn't recognize anyone pouring beer as being a brewnoser.

Sappyfest: everything was great, except the Luya's were more great than the others. Chad Vangaalen was another standout. The beer selection was as follows: Picaroons' Sappyfest-exclusive maple-flavoured Best Bitter, the Dooryard Summer Ale with extra water flavour for free, the Melon Head, which taught me that butterscotch and watermelon don't go well together, and the least offensive of them all, a Sappyfest special, which miraculously did not have any diacetyl issues.

Suffice it to say I didn't spend very much on booze. I think I bought six in total.

I see you didn't heed the advice I posted on Twitter to avoid La Barbarie.

Yeah, Chris and I had a good chat with him. Both beers I really enjoyed, the IPA being my preference. We pick up a couple of glasses as well.

I don't believe I went to La Barbarie.
