Learn to Homebrew Day - Saturday, November 2, 2013

Well, it's that time of year again, where we do some outreach to new or soon-to-be-new homebrewers, and do a demo brew for anyone and everyone interested.

Loosely organized by the American Homebrewers Association, Learn to Homebrew Day is to encourage folks thinking about brewing, or wanting to expand their brewing knowledge, can get together with more experienced folks and ask all those questions you were too afraid to ask on the forum, and see the whole process, from grain to glass [carboy] (or plastic bucket).

Our efforts to partner with a local homebrew shop in the past have failed, but perhaps we might have more luck this year?

Anyone interested in hosting and/or attending?

I'd definately be interested in an all grain session to see what is involved and get an understanding of what equipment I'll need to get started, and a feel for the steps involved.

I'm not setup to brew outdoors, but if someone has a mobile setup, I'd be more than willing to volunteer the patio. I have a 21.5*16' stone patio and a smaller upper deck that could accomodate quite a few people.

Should have mentioned: I could bring my BIAB setup somewhere. Electric.

I can host up here (Wolfville) and do a 10 gal kitchen BIAB with FWH and late hopping, or come down there and help out/learn.

I would be happy to host, if people are willing to come to the Hubbards area. I brew on a 3 vessel, single tier system and will likely be brewing anyway.

LOVE this idea, I'm a learn by doing type person.
Couldn't make it out last year but perhaps this year.

Howdy All,

I hosted a similar event this past weekend at my place in Waverley and introduced a few Festa Brew people to all-grain, even though I have only been AG for a little over a year or so. If my wife clears the idea, I could host at least 4 all-grain set-ups on my wrap around deck, it is about 800 sq ft or so minus the space the dog needs.....she loves home brewing. :headbang:

If anybody wants to come out to Waverley, as an option:

What type of partnership with a Home Brew Shop are you looking for?

While I can't supply space, and I can't be there because (and completely honestly) I'll be in the middle of a Stone Brewery Tour in Escondido, CA (yes, be jealous), I could supply ingredients or something...

I had a fantasy of setting up the system(s) outside in the shop's driveway/parking lot/sidewalk.

Mutually beneficial, as I saw it:

For shop: show current customers that BIAB or All-Grain is not a scary beast, but something anyone with basic knowledge can do (and they might to buy parts to upgrade their system from the store).
For Brewnosers: more exposure, more members, and sure, if the shop is willing, ingredients.

Have fun @ Stone, top 5 meals that Erin has ever had was there. Tour is fun too.

If I was going to be here I could provide space for sure. If you wanted to push it until Nov 16th I'd be willing to host in my Cul-de-Sac/Driveway

I have the day off tomorrow (Tuesday) unexpectedly, (something was cancelled at the last minute) and I'm going to do a BIAB brew, if anyone is bored/got the day off too, and wants to join in that'd be great.

Chicanuck, That looks like a nice spot for something like this!

I unfortunately will have to pull my place off the option list for Nov-02, I have been told that I committed to another social function that day (don't recall this) but would be willing host a brew day at a later date.

Chris, not many new to all grain brewers interested yet. Since no brewer ever stops learning how to brew, would it be an idea to expand the theme?

Personally, I would like to learn how to enter beer in a competition.

I was wondering what you thought about having a practice judging table there, so people like me could learn how to enter beers in a competition and get some feedback from some of the new judges, who might also enjoy the experiece.

Maybe other's want to learn about something, and advanced demonstrations could be arranged. Or talks from professional brewers, beer appreciation specialists etc. If not this year...next year maybe?

ps. Chris, were you offering this up to Dave? I think a lot of the brew shops organize these kind of events and we’d all help out. Might be a worthwhile promotional activity…Next year maybe? :)

I plan to come out for a bit, wherever it lands. It was fun last year and there's no reason to think we wouldn't sample a few home brew along the way.

Don't worry keith and Downs, *I* haven't forgotten about you! ;)

The Nov. 2 date is not set in stone, but for whatever reason I think it would be cool to time it with the "actual" AHA-organized L2HB Day. But that should not mean we can't have another group brew day when more/other folks can come, I know I would certainly participate.

I'm sure that were he in town, Dave would host, or at the very least be by to share in the good cheer and good beer. I'm sure if he did host a similar day sometime at his place later, myself and lots of others would come by. If he wants to sponsor (in whatever way he sees fit) ours, I don't think any of us would say no. :)

GRock, I can certainly offer my judging skills, for what their worth (I think bluenose and I determined 32 cents, though that might have been for other services), and am happy to give you an honest opinion on anything brought. And that goes for anyone else.

Or bring beer to share with the express caveat to *not* judge it, I'm happy to just enjoy it. :)

Please PM or Email me for my address, all new/old/soon-to-be brewers and family and friends are welcome. If we want, we could make an afternoon or evening out of it, throw something on the smoker and have a good ol' time.

BTW, after starting this thread, I asked Noble Grape on FB if they'd be doing an event (like I have asked them last year, and the year before). FOr the first time, they are doing *something* at their Burnside and Coldbrook stores, but they are not releasing (or don't know themselves) the details. Looks like extract batches, from the very latest post.

I think we should do something the second for sure, and could do another brew on another day later. I want to brew as many batches in the next few weeks as my fermenters can hold, so I'll brew twice.. Haha

Nov 2nd looks open right now. Should I have my wife pick me up afterwards lol. X) I'll bring a growler of something to share. See what's available then. And what tastes best.

I need to amend my offer slightly, I can't make a night of it, but don't have to kick everyone out till 4 or 5.
