I will remind you that the exam is in 2016.

And we need more judges next month for the ACBAs. (There will be swag)

I was thinking i would be in St. John's then but i should be back in Saint John and able to make the drive.

I'd like to throw my name in the hat assuming i can scrounge a group together in Saint John to do some off flavor work, i'll have to see if Craig is up for putting it on again.

Passed the entrance exam today, its only good for a year so i guess i'll have to rewrite it before we do this but i thought i'd take a crack at it since i had no idea how hard it was.

They give you a nifty certificate when you pass too. Not bad for 10 bucks lol.

That proves you at least know something about beer. Unlike just about everyone writing in the local media about it.

Hahaha yes they will print anything these days!

Do you have any comments on the cicerone course, is it worth doing that as a side project to the Bjcp?

The cicerone course is a bit of a cash grab. Compared to BJCP. It's a for profit project by some people in Chicago looking to monetize their beer knowledge. Certainly the lower levels are easy to get in - you'd be a Certified Beer Server now and acting like a snob in a downtown Toronto bar with your certificate on the wall behind you. (I've suffered through this).

The BJCP style guidelines are still the bible. Cicerones use them and most commercial beer competitions at least refer to them.

Cicerones know more about draft systems and bar gear than we have to. Generally they know very little about why a beer is bad, or off. Unless they are also a beer judge.

The Master Cicerone I talked to equated her status to about National beer judge, after which its all experience. There was one in Canada at the time. I think there are about 20 National BJCP judges in Canada and one Master or Grand Master.

The Cicerones don't get judging very well - no feedback to brewers. They know mostly commercial beer which is supposed to not be flawed (haha).

Not every Sommelier is a good wine judge. Some wine judges have never worked in a restaurant.

Awesome, thanks! I had the impression it was a bit of a cash grab because it isn't cheap.

I'm definitely focused on the BJCP, especially now that they flipped to the 2015 guidelines so it shouldn't change for awhile.

This is not to say that the BJCP will outlast a Cicerone program. People oddly sometimes don't trust things that don't cost much. But the tremendous volunteer effort is worth so much. Exam marking and proctoring is free. That's why the BJCP exam is so much less than the cicerone. They charge you to make up the exam, rent space, proctor and mark. It's a bit of a pyramid scheme in that the first ones in are reaping rewards.

Ray Daniels, who started it, is a great beer judge and author. I'm glad he's making some money in the business. But that is what it is.

I long for the good old days when bartenders didn't know enough about the beer they sold to waste time trying to talk me out of a double IPA because it would probably be too much for me. " have a Lug Tread!" An hour after I've judged the final CBA round of IPA and want to have a double. (Ok. I don't really, long for those days, but....)

How was that online test? I never had to do it. From what I've heard you don't just pass it because you like dark beers.

I actually found the online test to be challenging but fair.

200 question sin 60 minutes, some of them are quick and you don't have to think too much, like true or false questions about off flavors, pediococcus can result in XX or diacetyl tastes like YY, others you had to pick all that apply and it was more difficult.

Many questions are about comparing two styles, like the common grist between a helles bock and pilsner would be, or the head color on beer style X should be?

I think the pass mark is 60% so 120 correct out of 200.

When you finish you get a report telling you where you were weak. Mine had belgian styles and style comparisons.

I believe so. The style guidelines have morphed. This one is minus the hints. (I was the Canadian rep on the committee that created this thing)

I wasn't sure if it required updating to the 2015 styles or not.

I think your $$$ criticisms of the Cicerone program are somewhat valid Jeff. I had to laugh pretty hard when the day after I finally got my Certified Cicerone results (passed!) they announced another level (Advanced) before Master. I believe I shan't be taking those exams. However, what you do get for the money is a little broader/better than you give it credit, though, for example "Generally they know very little about why a beer is bad, or off" as you say just ain't the case. That's huge part of the exam. I think the program will survive as a good metric of knowledge/ability for those in the beer service/selection/retail industries.

If there turns out to be any room for the BJCP exam in December, I'd take it.

Cheers

I was referring to Cicerones I have judged with. They could recognize diacetyl for example, but were not aware it could be caused by more than one thing.

Jen would like to take the exam. How big is the waitlist so far?

Has anyone started group studies yet? I'd be interested in helping out.

It's at 12. I doubt all will go through with it. I am sure the local people would appreciate some coordination.
