May 7th - Homebrew Day + NS Craft Beer "Open Brewery Day"
Yes, need to do something. The OG Brewnoser and I were talking about this on Saturday, and we are making inquiries about a beer partner.
About an event idea:
May 7th is "National" Homebrew Day, and is in the middle of the NS Craft Beer Week, so may be perfect as a public-facing event. On Sat the 7th, it's Open Brewery Day. I can make some enquiries about having the Brewnosers be officially included in the Open Brewery Day, if we can either (a) get a volunteer to offer his/her house for a place that the public could visit, or (b) partner with a brewery or two or three and have homebrewers set up. (B) may be easier with the organizers, and we may be able to find a friendly brewery or two to partner with.
http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/a ... ebrew-day/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
What do folks think?
Updated April 26 (am I missing anybody?):
Here's a tally of locations where Brewnosers will be set up:
Gahan House - Tim Gregory: Tours, talk shop, maybe help with a brew?
Garrison - Celiacbrew on his Grainfather
Good Robot - MikeOrr brewing on their Sabco Brewmagic system
North (Dartmouth) - Rubbertoe and AMartin brewing on their pilot system
Spindrift - Derek and Kevin brewing and talking shop
Maritime Wine and Beer - Sandy and Mitch brewing on a Grainfather

Re: Brewnosers 30th anniversary
That sounds good Chris. In May we should be able to set up outside at a brewery or two. I know Garrison has had homebrew demos out front of the brewery for their competition before, and I would imagine that other breweries might be willing to host us outside for the afternoon - we'd be out of their way and presumably we'd be drawing some people out to their breweries.
I also like the idea of a special Brewnosers release, reminds me of the Boxing Rock/Ladies Beer League release. Would be cool to make that happen.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: Brewnosers 30th anniversary
Right now I think the plan for national homebrew day is for Sandy and I do a demo at Maritime Wine and Beer since they're super local for us.
I would love to be part of a brewnosers beer on Good Robot's pilot system if they're down.

My first thought was along the same lines. See if we can set up a brewing station and one of our local retailers in addition to the breweries.chalmers wrote:Awesome Sandy and Mitch!MitchK wrote:Right now I think the plan for national homebrew day is for Sandy and I do help do a demo at Maritime Wine and Beer since they're super local for us.

Maybe, if anyone is willing, get some of the pros in the area who started out at home to dig out some old gear or photos and show off the humble beginnings

Would someone be able to help me draft a proposal for this, and the "homebrewering at breweries" ideas, so that I can take it to CBANS fully-formed? I've already over-extended myself with beer stuff, hopefully someone with some time and gumption can put something in writing.
Thanks!

I am happy to draft a proposal letter, Chris. Hopefully I'll be able to send it on to you this evening.

I'm not able to assist with this, will be working that weekend for our network uplift. If the timeline changes for our project I should be able to help out on a brew day.

Re: Brewnosers 30th anniversary
As an update, I approached the Craft Brewers Association about partnering some homebrewers up with breweries during Open Brewery Day, and it was very well received. There are at least 5 breweries who will be hosting a homebrewer on their system, or at least to set up on premise to show off what the homebrewers can do. They loved the idea of finding pictures of the pro brewers' homebrewing start, with pictures, and/or homebrewing gear, too.
Thanks to Lucas for drafting the pitch, and you all for the great ideas.
Can I get a show of hands of folks who would be able to set up shop at their local brewery on May 7th, whether it be to show off your homebrew gear, give tours of the commercial brewery, and/or maybe brew on a big, or pilot, scale with the pros?

Re: Brewnosers 30th anniversary
I don't think I'd realistically be able to set up our brew gear remotely (our setup is silly and not particularly portable), but I'd be interested in helping with tours or a big scale brew!

I'd like to, however we have a network uplift on Mar 7&8th.

Re: Brewnosers 30th anniversary
I think I'm available. If we are looking to do a demo, I bought a Grainfather a little bit ago so my brew setup is an easy to transport and fairly self contained.

Not sure if I'm available yet, but I'm interested in doing something. My setup is pretty basic - pot, buckets, cooler, burner, chiller. I build my own water and have lots of "toys" (pH meter, hydrometer, refractometer).

Just confirmed with Karen that we'll be participating with our Sabco (pilot plant), plus Doug (brewer) or I will be giving tours. She is "designating" us a Brewnoser. Stay tuned.

Re: Brewnosers 30th anniversary
I should be around, either for touring or brewing or showing off my stuff. My gear is portable, sort of, in the sense that it's not bolted to the house. I could always leave the rig here, which is more or less just a shelving unit on wheels if I brought or had access to something else to stand my mash tun on (no pumps, all gravity fed). Everything else could fit in my car.

I'm available to help out wherever I may be needed that weekend. I brew on a stove top in a 1 bedroom so maybe a demo of how that works?

I've split this off from the other thread, and updated the first post with volunteers' names. Anyone else interested in taking part in a demo or act as tour guide at a local brewery or homebrew shop?
