Cheap! Temp controller (ebay)

Post by Maritimer » Fri Aug 31, 2012 8:35 am

Just bought one of these,

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/180954984908?ssP ... 568wt_1163" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Could be crappy, but at 11 bucks it's worth the risk, When is arrives I'll let you know if it works.

complete the package with this and your set up for lagers for less than 15 bucks (hopefully).

Are you using it on a fridge? I would be a little bit concerned about the lack of control over the delay. You don't want your compressor cycling on and off rapidly. That said, it does say
Widly used in home appliance's motor and electrical equipment, such as air conditioner motor, transformer, thermal appliances, etc.
Personally, I prefer this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/221074135161?ssP ... 1497.l2649 and once you buy that LCD, this is cheaper. A bunch of guys have these already and seem happy. I have one I'm using and it's working out fantastic. I'm building another 2 right now, and 2 more on order (I'll have 3 fridges, a mash ton, and then a spare).

I saw those but I was concerned with the relay only being rated for 5 amps, thought the compressor on the deep freeze would draw more than that.

I actually have had one of these in my cooling chamber wired to a fan and cell phone charger for about 6 months and it works fine. The LCD would be nice as I have to rely on the bucket thermometer to tell me if I'm at the right temp.

Nice finds. I personally have 3 of the ones Jayme mentioned though. I like that mini digital thermometre.

I opened it up and the relay is actually good for 15A resistive load at 120V. Not sure why they say 5A in the ad... And if you're really concerned, you could always beef it up with an external 20A relay.

my controller arrived last week, I have it installed on a small deep freeze and it's working well. temp fluctuates between 65 and 69F right now. Getting the proper setting is tricky as you have to adjust the set point, wait and verify with a thermometer. All in all, I'm happy. It does what it needs to do for $23 all in. Pretty much the same as the Johnson controllers sold locally.
