Wanted: Keggle

Post by Graham.C » Thu Nov 03, 2011 9:05 am

Hey guys,

Where is a good spot to grab a keg? I have a buddy who can cut it for me, but I still need the keg itself. I have been told that scrap metal recycling depots, near breweries, are a good spot to look. Any suggestions?

keggermeister knew of a good place in Dartmouth. Give him a pm. If you don't have any luck, I may be able to find something.

It's a building chock full of used restaurant equipment, mixers, sinks, roasters, pop machines, you name it. They had four 3 gallon corny kegs there, but three need new posts, and I'm not sure if the fit is universal for ball/pin to what is on there now for threads. There was also a couple dual gauge CO2 sets with 5 or six pin lock QDs on them, and lots of other junk too. Kegerator, etc...

What is Atlantic Wholesale? I've only been living out here for just over a year, so forgive my stupidity and when I google it I get lots of hits.

When I called them up, they said they were not allowed to deal in Kegs.

They used to. I'd show up if I were you. Talk to the distinctly Indian man. He is the guy that always sold them to me.

The more I think about it, the more I think I'm in the market for one of these too. Perhaps when we figure out where there is a somewhat reliable supply of busted kegs fit for keggle conversion we could make a sticky in the group buys or some supplier subforum?

I'm in the market for a couple of these as well. I've been chasing a few down on Kijiji as they come up, but the prices that people are looking for are ridiculous most of the time.

Yeah, people are fucked for the most part. $25 to $35 is the range.

That's why supply and demand is nice. Offer them something nice and low (what you think it's worth). If they still haven't moved it in a couple of days/weeks and want it gone, they'll take your offer.

Make sure its a busted one. If its over 100 bucks it's likely one they bought for a keg party and are selling at the expense of the brewery.

Unfortunately most of them seem willing to hold onto it as long as it takes to get their $70 to $100 out of it…

Then it's a matter of who caves first. I sent a message to my contact at Garrison to see what they do with damaged kegs. I'll keep everyone posted.

Good to know! Is that large enough for a 10 gallon batch? Room for boilovers once the lid is off, etc.

Be tight on the BK, but should be OK for the HLT.

Beggars can't be choosers, I suppose. If I can get one for cheap through them, I've got an HLT. I'm hoping to find a 10 gallon cooler for my MLT. I may have a mish-mash (pun intended) of container sizes for a while...

Pretty much—though I think my wallet is more strong willed than any Kijiji sellers. :pow:

Definitely keep us posted, I'd be interested in a 50L for my HLT.

I heard back from Meg this morning. Funnily enough she directed me to the brewnosers forums for resources on finding kegs. Anyway, she said it's pretty rare that they had kegs for scrapping (I figured as much) but she promised to try and post on here somewhere any time they do, to give us first dibs before it goes to junk. That's for the 50L kegs.

Just was at Granite. Keven has some 50l aluminium kegs he may part with. He will look and get us a price and how many he has.
