Which part specifically is a Japanese technique? You didn't provide any information, and it just looks like a stained piece of wood.

It is called Shou Sugi Ban, a Japanese technique for preserving wood. The are chared, cleaned, stained and then sealed.
Drilled and tapped with a brass insert for standard tap handles.
