Free! 3 Bay Fermentation Chamber/Kegerator & add ons

Post by oceanic_brew » Sat Mar 13, 2021 3:23 pm

Since I’ve upgraded to a production brewery not finding much use for the homebrew gear.

Make me an offer if you’re interested!

I built this unit a couple years back. It is a kegerator with 5 shanks, holds 5 kegs. The freezer side has a supply and return duct installed which feeds the rightmost bay of a 3 bay fermentation chamber. The supply duct has a computer fan hooked to an STC 1000. Each additional bay has the same setup.

This design works as follows for a lager in bay 3 and ales in 1&2 : Load fermentor in Bay 3, attach temp probe from STC 1000 to fermentor. Plug in fan from supply duct to 120v feed from STC, plug in heat wrap or plate (not included) to STC Heat Cycle. Air is ducted from freezer side of fridge into bay, cooling fermentor. Load fermentors for ale requiring lowest temperature in bay 2, same configuration, air is pulled from bay 3 into bay 2. Same deal with Bay 1.

I successfully fermented a Doppelbock in bay 3, IPA in 2, while having a saison at 28 degrees in bay 1.

The carcass of the chamber is premium core plywood, with rigid foamular c-300 on the inside, all caulked and sealed, the interior base has some form of food safe paneling can’t remember what it’s called. Each bay is separated by an insulated wall. The ducts from the freezer side are insulated. The entire unit sits on a cart that has lower grade locking castors.

The top is stainless steel and has a small sink. Taps, and drain plumbing, which is very handy for quick cleaning and rinsing of small items near the fermentors.

Items included: All comes with unit, no exceptions

3 bay fermentation chamber (holds up to 2 20l fermentors in each bay - only can control one fermentation in each bay at a time)
120v chamber plug
3 x STC 1000, wiring, and 120v receptacles
3 x Fans
Refrigerator
5 x Shanks (NO faucets included or pigtails/beer lines)
Sink, Taps, drain plumbing
Cart with locking castors
Temperature control for kegerator
Wooden shelving unit inside kegerator holds 4 corny kegs, additional space for 1-2 underneath
Matching exhaust hood
15 gallon Kettle (no fittings or elements)
11 gallon igloo cooler (no fittings)
8 gallon Kettle (no fittings)
25’ SS immersion chiller

Not included: the upper plywood backing and upper shelving, drip tray, all tank fittings, elements, Brewhouse Control panel (pictured)

Notes: this is not a CSA certified unit, it was not inspected by Nova Scotia Power. The unit works perfectly and has for 3 years but features exposed lumex coated wires, and metal receptacle boxes where BX armored cable and wet location/sealed boxes should be. The wires would need to be replaced with BX and a better job done with running them throughout the cabinet. The unit should be plugged into a GFCI receptacle if the sink is plumbed or any water is to be near the unit.

Note: the doors on the chamber were never finished, they require insulated backing and weather stripping. Pretty easy and cheap fix. I’ve fitted the two chambers with a piece of rigid foam that will come with the unit.

Note: The fridge is not intended to have two 6” holes in its freezer and is not rated to supply enough cooling for a custom fabricated fermentation chamber therefore I cannot guarantee the longevity of the unit. However, it has worked flawlessly for 3 years.

There is no plywood backing on the fermentation bay as it’s always sat against an exterior wall.

You will need a truck/trailer/van/uhaul and at least 2 other people to get this into your house. It just barely fits through a 34” door with the door removed.

I can part with the keggerator half of this setup after Hoptoberfest. I have a van so can help you get it to your place in the Halifax area.
