free golding rhizomes

If I didn't have some Goldings on the way I'd be all over that. They look great! If you have some left over runts It might be cool to try to grow one outside the hop yard, like along a fence or the shed.

Ok, that's four then. The two bigger ones are probably ok to cut into chunks, normally, but I'm not sure how it works where they're already shooting off vines. Does that work? We can always look at them on Saturday. Cornelius, will you be there?

Plan to be, yup! still have to work out the drive situation, so i'm not sure what time i will be there, but definitely for a few hours

If that's all then I guess I was too slow. If there's any still available I'm definitely interested. I'm planning on making it out this weekend.

Any recommendations on other rhizome sources? I realize many suppliers are sold out. I'd like to try a couple in my backyard; I think the spot I have in mind would be perfect.

That's too bad. I think I still have about 4 in the fridge that haven't been picked up if you'd like to try again. I planted 5 of them myself and they're all doing awesome!

To everyone else who got these rhizomes: Be careful of hop aphids. I noticed one on there a couple days ago, now there are a bunch. Trying some basic pesticide to get rid of them

The rhizome piece I got was the one with a 4-inch stem already on it, so hopefully I will be the only one affected, but I thought I'd share. Otherwise, the rhizome is doing great, up to about a foot tall. Was going to transplant it outside this weekend, but I'm going to keep it inside another week to hopefully deal with this issue.

anyone ever experience this before? is it an issue or just an annoyance?

Yeah, aphids can be a hop pest. Spider mites too. Had both in NG. The aphids seem pretty benign, the spiders mites kill the leaves.

are you using store bought pesticides or diy?

store bought. one f the ingredients is apparently effective on hop aphid. when I was googling, some place said even a very dilute solution of dish soap might be effective.

Safer's Insecticidal soap, try it on a small area, just to see how it reacts.

Hydroponic stores are the best sources for foodsafe insect control IMHO. Like SM-90.

i figured foodsafe wouldn't matter too much at this stage in the game. i figured a couple months of growth and rain should pretty much get rid of it (but this is just speculation)

another possibility is that at this early stage in its development, the toxic insecticides could cause your Goldings to mutate into a hop super hero... I'd say go for it

then again, I don't think I'd want a hop super villain... gah the dilemma!

Aphids tend to be bad when the weather is cool and moist. The biggest problem with them is later on when they can get into the cones before harvest and promote rot. This early, they tend to feed on younger growing tips which ends up reducing your overall yield. Safer's soap is a good control method, but you have to cover the insects completely with the soap in order to suffocate them. Best to deal with them now while you can still reach the growing tip.
