Hi Rebecca,

All commercial vendors that I know of have dug and shipped their rhizomes for the season. I have dealt with Left Fields (http://leftfieldstore.crannogales.com/catalogue.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), which dug out the bulk of their crop early last month and re-opened their store a few weeks ago to sell their excess. I managed to get an order in for a couple of rhizomes before they shut down for the year. I've seen a few people on here giving away rhizomes, which would be a good way to go if you can find them, otherwise you might have to wait until next summer.

Hi,
My 1st plant I bought @ a plant store similar to Farmer Clems, and my 2nd was a root clipping from a friend. I'd try a local plant store 1st. I got my 1st one planted in August and I thought it was too late, 5 years later that plant is doing great!

You're about one month or so late for most cuttings now...might find a spare plant out there, otherwise it's next year.

Just out of curiosity ... what type of area do you need for hops ... got an area I would like to fill in where we lost some trees over the past few years

Anywhere that gets lots of sun and has good drainage.

I can offer you some cuttings if you're in Halifax some time soon.

When I was living in Toronto I bought some from Richters Herbs, a little ways out of town. They offer a few different varieties that are suitable for brewing (Cascade, Mount Hood, Hallertauer, Nugget, Williamette). I had great success with all three I ordered (Hallertauer, Nugget, and Williamette), with the Hallertauer doing the best, probably because it shaded the others. They will mail order rhizomes in the spring (http://www.richters.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Unfortunately I was only able to haul the Hallertauer out of the ground to bring back to NS with me, as digging out crowns that have been well established for 3 years is labour intensive and I was in a hurry. I could likely make some cuttings of the Hallertauer, as I am still cutting new bines as they come up.

Hey! Sorry I havent been on the forum lately. I received some rhizomes (which I don't think are taking off), but I live in Halifax! So I'm here all the time! I think I'm going to hold off until next year when I'm not too late for planting them. It seems as though I have already failed haha. On the other side of things- the rest of my garden is striving!!

You'll be suprised how hard it is to kill a hop plant!

Agreed. And even if they don't produce much this year, they'll for sure take off next year. This is my second year Cascade as of a few days ago. I think I only got maybe a pound wet off it last year (about 4oz dry).

Did the leaves stay on the Erocia?

That was a big rhizome.

If anyone has any surplus trimmings I love to give some company to my single little vine to at least have established for next year, in exchange for a couple brews of course. X)

If you happen to be up this way I can give you some clippings off my Cascade and Zeus plants. There's tons of shoots coming off each of them.

GAM - The erocia you dropped off for me is doing fine, and since there were so many, I just planted two and gave the rest to sleepyjamie and Rubbertoe. I think sleepyjamie's are doing fine, not sure about Rubbertoe's. Mine are probably two to three feet or so anyway. I can't remember how good that is.

Jeremy - I have a few golding rhizomes I planted in the woods in the last few weeks, just because my plants keep sending them up and I hate throwing them out. I really have no use for them where they are and figured I'd end up giving them away next spring. If you want them, they're yours, but I make no guarantees for them being planted in June.

I gave them all to Jamie, but the golding I got from you is doing ok. Some of my second year are getting big; they are staked high but have no lines to climg up yet so are drooping back down. I need to take care of that...

a couple of questions for the pros:

do hops grow pretty slow their first year?

have you had trouble any particular varieties?

They definitely tend to be a bit slower in their first year, depends on what time of year you get them in the ground though. I've had trouble with my Centennial plant. Didn't do anything at all last year (main bine only 3ft. high and died off). This year they're a little better, getting close to 4ft, of course it's pretty early in the year, so they could take off. Nothing like my CTZ or Cascade plants though.

Edit: I'm definitely not a pro, but hops are super hard to kill.

I'm no pro.

I expect nothing the first year, some second year and to be able to give away rhysomes the third.
