Could a domestic water heater get hot enough or would you have to swap out the elements? How would you calculate what size element you would need?

You would need to calculate the volume of the boil and at least remove the controls for the elements. Then calculate the BTU's required to bring that volume to a boil in a reasonable time.

This would not have an element it was hot (warm) water preheat for a hot water tank.

I know for a 55gal kettle they recommend two 5500 watt elements, each of which draw ~24 amps. This one would need at least one more, or you could probably do a jacketed glycol with an external furnace/boiler

Or weld legs/frame on it and use a burner of some sort.

I e-mailed the guy about it yesterday (prior to seeing this post) and haven't heard back yet. With the double walls I was thinking mash ton.
