Wanted: Square Metal Tubing

Hey Everyone,

I'm starting the process of building a brew structure and I'm looking for metal bed frame rails for the stand. If you have one kicking around that you no longer need I'd be happy to take it off of your hands.

Also, and less likely, I'm in the market to borrow a welder in the future to weld this thing together.

Thanks

:cheers:

keep in mind bed rails are similar to hardened spring steel and can be a PITA to work with

Yes. But they're not that bad to cut and weld fairly easily.

Essentially I'm trying to get a frame for free or super cheap. I'm not in a position to purchase metal tubing.

Here is where I got the idea: http://www.brewboard.com/index.php?show ... show=&st=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It'll be a different design (single tier) but same basic prinicple. In the distant future I'd like to convert to an electrical system and this is the first step.

Cool! looks like a good project. Keep your eye on kijiji, there are always people giving stuff away on there.

Crap, I chucked out 2 frames not a month ago!!! Just checked the basement (dungeon), no bed-frames left.

Just wait for Cape Breton Christmas, aka Spring/Fall Clean-up you should be able to find everything you need. And Bed rails become brittle when welded due to the high carbon content. Mild steel would be much better.

So like all of my projects this one is spiraling out of control!

After reading more, I'm moving away from bed frame angle and looking at square steel tubing. I'm thinking 1.5" 11 gauge (1/8") square tubing. Anyone know where I can get this on the cheap? Here's what I've found so far:

Metals R Us - $1.90 ft
Russel Metals - $3.50 ft

I assume that you were building some sort of stand. If so, did you weld it yourself or source that out? I've found a Lincoln ac225 welder for $150 (with helmet) and I'm considering it, but it would be good to know how much getting a stand put together would cost me.

for a straight forward mostly square stand you could easily get away with bolted connections if you have access to a drill press, some high speed metal bits and some cutting oil. I'd suggest square tubing for the uprights and angle for the cross pieces. Mild carbon angle iron should be a bit cheaper than HSS from a metal supplier.
