Recently purchased a 50`hose and 50`copper piping to make a CFC.

There should be around 25`of each left over (roughly). Selling the pipe and hose for $35.

Might be interested.. what is your plan for the chiller (what other fittings are required, etc?

i built the chiller for myself to replace an existing immersion chiller. the extra fittings you will need to buy yourself.

1/2" copper pipe 6" in length (i can probably cut you some from my existing copper pipe)
2x copper tee
2x end caps
2x garden hose adapter

and whatever fitting you need to connect the 3/8" cobber tubing to your wort kettle.

i have photos which i can upload later on.

If Tim doesn't take it, I will. And whatever other fittings you can part with that will make life easier.

Where did you get the copper from? Looking at building an immersion chiller...

Would love to see pictures (or a link to a homebrewtalk thread with a similar build?). Depending on whether or not I think I can handle fabricating this I'll take em, otherwise I'll bow out.

i have all the tools required to make it. blow torch, brush, solder paste, solder, drill etc...

if you have some beer to spare i could come over and help you build it.

lowe's in bayers lake. they had 50' for $50. but i got the last one. not sure if they have re-stocked since last weekend.

I actually have pretty decent fabrication skills (and have all but the solder/brush/paste) , I was thinking more along the lines of the cost of the rest of the items to finish it. Also if I understand correctly, a counterflow requires me to be able to pump the wort through it (or gravity works pretty good?).

Screw it, I'll take the parts, ha. I'll figure it out one way or another. I'm away until Canada Day weekend, so if that is ok I'll drop by sometime that weekend to pick it up (and check our your build).

Gravity works pretty well for me - my brew kettle is on a 4' stand. You probably need a pump if you have much less height than that.

if the kettle is higher than the bucket then you can just let gravity do the work and drain the wort through the CFC.

the CFC is a spiral design and the output is lower than the input, so all the wort should pass through the CFC.

I would say the extra parts (eg. copper wire, adapters/fittings) will cost between $15 and $20.

Is the CFC that much better than the immersion? I was just about to build an immersion chiller as there seemed to be some thought that sanitation is very difficult to manage with the CFC's if you guys have found that's not the case I'd be curious to know. thx

I have no issues with my cfc or my old plate chiller. I have a pump and run HLT water though it for mashing. And then I recirc hot wort before cooling. Nothing should survive...

Ya, my thoughts were that I would recirc the hot wort before cooling as well (probably still give a shot of star san through it before starting the brew just in case).

A counter flow chiller is better because the wort enters one end near boiling and comes out the other end a few seconds later at pitching temperatures. The wort spends very little time in the danger zone where as with a immersion chiller it may take 30min or more.

Does iodophor react with copper like starsan does? I left my immersion chiller in a bucket of starsan, initially it put a nice shine on the copper but after a week it all turned green and stained the bucket. I'd like to be able to leave a sanitizer in the chiller.

I'm thinking about putting my immersion chiller in a bucket of ice water and running the wort through it rather than putting it in the wort and running water through it. Has anyone tried this? Seems to me it should work similar to a counter flow chiller. This would also allow be to brew on my balcony where I don't have running water or a drain.

not sure about iodophor, i stopped using it because it stained my clothes. according to john palmer starsan is safe for use with copper.

i did try this out the other night with a 10 gallon batch and the wort (using no pump) was coming out very slow. ideally you will need a pump for this.

Well, I'm in the market for an immersion chiller. However I assume that this copper pipe is not suitable for such an endeavour?

it can be used as an immersion chiller as well.

In that case I may be interested in just the copper pipe.

Is that a March 809 pump in the photo? Just wondering where and how much was it? I'm hoping to get one soon.
