Anyone here doing gardens this year?

I always plant a garden but this year we're moving into a new place so I'll be a little late starting (Mid-June) but I can share any tips I have.

Yeah, we're putting our big veggie garden in the backyard again this year. Our friend way by with his tractor and tiller last weekend, I was rock-picking yesterday, and as soon as it stops raining this week, I'm going to finish the prep and get 'er planted.

What kinda tips are you looking for?

Just planted ours yesterday. We've got two 4'x8' raised beds for veggies and a few blueberry bushes and strawberry beds.

I'm pretty much the same boat as you, we are doing gardens for the first time this year. I'm just about done building a 4x10 raised bed for my hops, and am going to be building a 4x4 raised bed for veggies. That will probably get framed up in the garage though as the rain has started.

For the 4x4 we are doing square foot gardening, looks like you get some pretty good results from a fairly small space.

This is all I have right now. Onion, baby watermelon, peppers, cilantro, grape tomato. I'm near downtown calgary so space is somewhat limited. I might build a 2x5 bedding for it once I figure out spacing on my deck.

If you are space limited Google square foot gardening, it's supposed to be fantastic to limited spaces like you have

You can have get amazing results using pots on your patio. Just make sure they're big enough and feed them regularly. They'll also dry out a lot faster so you'll need to water more often but I've got some bIg harvests out of potted tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and herbs.

Onions might not do well in pots and melons are usually heart breakers for me and never produce much.

Excellent good to know. This year will mostly be a learning experience. I have another terrace off my bedroom I don't use so might put some veggies up there as well.

NICE! That must be one hell of a harvest.

Sometimes a little _too_ much, but I try to keep up with succession planting. Re-seed certain things (carrots, radishes, green onions, spinach) every two weeks so I don't harvest _all_ of one thing at one time and have none the rest of the summer. My back gets pretty tired of picking peas and beans by mid mid-August for sure.

I've turned it into a little market garden and sell to co-workers, friends and family - the wife doesn't complain nearly as much, knowing that there is $ coming from the time and expense
