Cell phone plan recommendations, two different needs

Post by chalmers » Thu Jul 02, 2015 2:46 pm

Hi folks,

In checking another thread, I see that in AtlCan, Koodo seems to be the cheapest going for a decent number of minutes and data (Unlimited minutes & 1 GB for $55 currently). Wind and other providers have lower prices, but not available in our region. Does this sound right? Would be bringing our own cell, which may change things slightly. And wouldn't be signing up for a long-term contract, unless it offered significant savings.

The other plan I'm interested in is a temporary measure: I am downsizing from two phones to one, and want to set up a forwarding-only plan (for both text and voice). Maybe for six months while I ensure everyone has my new number and I get it changed with my bank and other important places. The cheapest monthly rate I could find is $15, also at Koodo, but I'm unsure whether it includes unlimited forwarding or not. Was also tempted to go to Pay As You Go, but they seem to be charging for every forwarded minute. But I don't talk that much...

Does anyone have any suggestions for either of these situations? I'm currently with Rogers, but am at the end of a contract, and open to all providers.

Thanks!

The $55 koodo plan is about as good as it gets at the moment - I have one very similar that they were offering a few years ago and I haven't seen anything better. The only downside is that data overages are a bit pricey

I don't have anything to recommend w.r.t. call forwarding- just don't know anything about it

We signed up for koodo about a month ago - they had a promo on where their $65 "Heavyweight" plan on fo $55. Unlimited Canada wide calling, 2GB data, voicemail etc.

I bet you could still get that deal if you're really nice to them

2 gigs is a key upgrade - I got it fromn an offer back in 2012. It's worth a shot asking !

Perfect, thanks guys.

I found the Fido price, but am pretty sure that requires 2 years contract, which I think we'll avoid. 1 GB sounds like plenty, but having that extra GB there as a security blanket sounds swell!

Maybe while I'm swapping out the one, I'll ask them about forwarding only for the second. Currently with the Rogers phone I've got forwarding, it also has to be powered on and connected to their network. Would love to be able to turn it off and sell it, but keep the number active. Found something for forwarding calls, but not texts. I'm not that popular, but just worried about missing something.

yeah i guess it depends on your usage - i consistently hit around 1.5 without really thinking about my usage - could stay under 1 if i had to, but i prefer not to worry about it. if you are okay with less data then there are probably other decent options.

I'm happy with koodo service, but the plans have gone downhill.

As in pricing has gone up, or what you get has gone down, or ??

My plan has no long distance in Canada, 250 minutes daytime/month, unlimted text, call display, voice mail etc, plus 6 gig of data for $60/month. Seems new plans are worse for more money....

whoa, i don't know when you got that, i never saw that plan. best i've seen was what i got ($56 for unlimited canada wide talk and text, call display voicemail etc but only 2 gig of data then 10% knocked off because i don't have a tab, bringing it down to $50.40). but mine was only available as a christmas special in 2012

one good thing about koodo (and probably any of the others if you dont have a contract) is you can freely switch plans once a month. so if a better one comes up, just switch to it

I grabbed this plan a few years ago when 6 gig plans were all the rage, then they seemed to disappear. It all got worse instead of better. So much for competition...but I've been fairly happy with Koodo. I'll never use Bell again after they invented 'leaving' fees.

Yeah those plans are all but gone. When I switched from Rogers to Telus I had to go from 6gb to 1gb.

In case anyone is curious, I ended up signing up for voip.ms to keep my old number. It has the ability to forward both calls and texts to a number (or email), or go directly to voicemail, or lots of other choices. It cost $8.75 USD to port my number in, and costs $0.85 per month and $0.009 per minute (yes, that's 85 cents per month and 0.9 cents per minute). I put $25 in my account and expect it to last for a year or more (I'm not that popular).

For the cell plan, ended up going with Koodo, thanks for the confirmation from y'all on here.
