Overall Worst City: New Glasgow, N.S.

For the second year in a row, New Glasgow has placed last on MoneySense’s annual ranking of Canadian cities and towns with populations over 10,000. The town’s problem areas include high unemployment, low incomes, limited public transit, a high crime rate and lots of cold, wet weather. Still residents, including florist Suzanne McKean-Makin, say they couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. She loves to travel but says there’s always “such a good feeling about coming home.” The town's hospitality is what makes people want to come back over and over again, she says. New Glasgow recently won a national Communities in Bloom award for its green efforts and has been named the top entrepreneurial city in its province by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. New Glasgow also ranks in the top 20 for housing affordability.

At least they've got pizza.
