Wondering if anyone knows what type of stain this is? Semi-transparent, or solid?

That's what I was thinking, but there's spots that are flaking. Will semi-transparent flake?

Not if prepped and applied properly.

The humidity and quality of lumber plays some havoc with the finish.

Would it look like that if it hasn't been stained since it was built 16 years ago?

Hard to say. Ocean/wind/abrasion can affect it. Is it only on one or two sides? If you look close it will show layers of product.

16 years is a very long time for any product.

Hmm, it is on the water and close to the coast, and I highly doubt it has been stained in 16 yes. Lol. Thanks Sandy!

I agree with Sandy - it looks like semi. I've had some oil based semi "flake" on some fresher pressure treated lumber ... but normally it just wears. Proper prep is the key.

So based on what you guys see, what type of stain would you use to acheive the original look of that stain? Water based, oil based?

That's been our experience on the back deck.

I don't think you can get real oil based stain anymore. Any of the paint shops (not Kent or Home Depot), I use Dulux on Kay at Ilseville in the north end, can provide you with options.

Stuff I used was from Home Hardware, their brand. It was a linseed oil base, but I haven't bough it in over a year and I can't find a listing for it on their web site. Lasted great (4+years) on railings and uprights, and does well on lower traffic deck surfaces. Highest traffic point was where you see some real wear on it but still covers well.

I know I'm late to this but I've used Flood paint/stain before and find that it works great. You can get oil based as well.

That's actually the one I was looking at using. I've read some reviews on the flood line and it's rated quite high.
