What is this called?

Post by Jimmy » Sun Apr 20, 2014 4:55 pm

What's the piece with the red gasket connected to it? It's from inside our garden hose faucet and the gasket is ripped. Looking to pick a new one up to replace it (the whole assembly or just the gasket).

Appears to be a diaphragm of sorts.

Looks like some kind of gasket/plunger/check material.

Jeez, Jimmy, that's clearly a "thingy". Technical term, I know. ;)

It's the thing you put in a baggy and take to "The Home Depot".

I know the pluming dept. guy at Home Hardware. I emailed him the picture at the weekend and they have nothing like it in stock. He's emailed a few of his suppliers today with the picture and talked to them on the phone. He said it was for beer. That always moves something to the top of the priority list with guys. I took my heat stick in to CT once looking for a knob for it. After a long time I managed to find an assistant and he asked me accusingly "what's that thing for any way" as soon as I said it was for making beer, the whole tone changed, he radioed other guys and before long there were three or four guys working on it, opening packages, modifying knobs with pliers. I eventually found a knob that would fit at the music shop. They just gave it to me and said if "I ever needed anyone to try the beer".

Not holding out much hope for your part though. You might have to get a new faucet. They keep changing designs for those things. I had trouble once and went to a few plumbing supply shops and they said "sorry, been discontinued".

Vacuum breaker / anti-siphon valve / backflow preventer. Take your pick - all the same thing. May or may not be replaceable, so many brands out there. May need the entire assembly. That's from our resident plumber.

Thanks for the help. I might take it to Atlantic Hardchrome tomorrow to see if they have anything that will match up.
