kijiji screwed up???

Post by Jmac00 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 9:48 am

Anyone else having problems on the site, wondering if its just the computers i'm using. When i search for something (i.e. beer), it doesn't list anything related to what's being searched for. Anyone else having this issue?

Yep. Same issue here. I've got an RSS feed set up to check on "Beer" in NB/NS/PEI, and it keeps bringing back posts on everything imagineable.I wondered if it was only me. Guess not!

This is the program I'm using: http://www.feedreader.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Download and install that (It's free)

When you do a search in Kijiji, on the bottom right of the results page, there's a button labelled "RSS". If you right-click on it, you can "Copy Link Address" or something similar (depending on your browser).

Go into Feed Reader, hit F3, and the "Add Feed" screen will show up, and the Kijiji RSS feed that you just "copied" should automatically be listed. Click on the "Ok" button, and then you're all set. You'll then have a list of feeds that you're watching on the left of the screen. Right click on one of those and select Edit, Feed. You can then update the "Update period", which determines how often it'll check for new posts.

I've got most of them searching every 10 mins or so. When something new is found, a small pop-up shows up in the bottom right corner of my screen.

Even more bizarre, from what I can tell, the problem is limited to beer. Searches for other items seem to return expected results (for me)

Just accidently realized if you type "BEER" in all caps the search will work, but not in lower case. Apparently, you have to use poor internet ettiquete to make Kijiji happy.

Well they cracked down on the "BEER" search term it now just gives everything.

Selling alcohol is breaks there policy so they just redirect the searches to everything. Its a dumb way to deal with it because beer paraphernalia is perfectly ok to sell on kijiji.

So i emailed them again.... :pow:

Basically i explained how selling beer related things doesn't break their 'alcoholic beverages' policy.....stuff like glasses, mugs, signs, empty bottles, beer making equipment, etc. I explained the same thing with wine, noting that searching for 'wine' still works ok.

response i got
"Thank you for contacting Kijiji Canada Community Support. I'm very sorry about that, it's not a matter of not being able to search for the word "Beer". The problem lies in our search engine, it is picking up "beer" as "be" much like it would pick up "airliner" as "airline" etc..."

Makes sense to an extent....i replied noting that it has always worked before, its only recent after some updates that it does not work anymore....we'll see what they say then. In the meantime, WTF am i supposed to do at work now???? :cheers3:

I could kind of understand that, but when entering a word with quotation marks it shouldn't append it like that.
