I'm pretty sure there were never wolves on PEI either. Not sure about NB though. The coyotes are at the point where they're becoming basically dangerous vermin.mr x wrote:I don't think we ever had wolves here in Nova Scotia, so these animals are not filling a vacuum that I can see.

From: http://www.enr.gov.nt.ca/_live/pages/wp ... olves.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Wolves were once distributed throughout Canada. They are now extinct in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, the settled and agricultural parts of Quebec, Ontario and the western provinces.
I can find peer review if you don't trust the above link, but wolves were once a part of most ecosystems in North America.

If you are interested I can also dig up the research that shows how coyotes are filling the void left in the ecosystem which results in bigger, bolder, pack-based coyotes. I used it in my bio-geography class a couple years ago so its in a filing cabinet somewhere around here.

For some reason, I would prefer wolves than the eastern coyote. If we get rid of the coyotes, we'll have just made room for the wolves to move back in.

But when is the last time wolves were a part of this system? You'd have a hard time finding somebody who remembers wolves as an effective force. And I agree with Andy, the wolves would be preferable.

Re: Dumb ass people thread
Human memory is but a fraction of the time-frame ecosystem dynamics operate on, so I don't think it really matters who alive remembers when the goal is to fix issues in and around the natural environment. In this case the out of control coyote populations.mr x wrote:But when is the last time wolves were a part of this system? I agree completely that wolves are better around humans then the new-ish behaviors that we are seeing in coyote packs. Although, I don't think that the eradication of coyotes would result in the wolves return. Ecosystems are non-equilibrium, dynamic, systems which can't run backwards. We could re-introduce wolves, which would likely put the coyotes back in-check, but who knows how wolves would handle the heavily anthropomorphized forests. Plus then you have all the political issues of wolf attacks being the fault of whatever government OK'ed wolf re-population. We could do what humans have always done, kill them and just see what happens, but that mentality is starting to cause a obviously negative fallout with an ever expanding human pressure on our natural systems. I think the solution, if there is one, is a lot more complicated and would probably be less exciting to debate, except among a few bio-geographers and ecologists. IMO, I say if they are a threat to you get a shotgun but think rationally about if they really are a threat before you just start killing. I have run into a few coyotes since I moved out East, never really been a problem to me. That being said I am not a small tasty sized child, nor do I have any of my own to protect.
Anyways I'm ranting now and its not about beer, or even with a beer in hand. I apologize.

When I say timeframe, this is what I mean. After a certain amount of time, the vacuum dissappears, and it is the new normalized ecosystem. We are well past the stage where 'coyotes' are filling a vacuum AFAIAC. They are and should be treated no different than fire ants. Just my rant.

No fear of that. The coyote is here to stay. Nowhere in North America has the coyote ever been in danger of being eradicated, or even controlled.akr71 wrote:For some reason, I would prefer wolves than the eastern coyote. We had another sighting near a school here in Mount Pearl Friday.
