"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I don't see it just disappearing. If something else better comes along, sure, but people aren't going to just abandon facebook because they are tired of it. I think it's tied into peoples lives too much for it to disappear without something replacing it.

That and modern social media hasn't been around for long enough for them to have the metrics to make accurate predictions. They could use the same logic to predict the end of any new "trend."Jimmy wrote:I don't see it just disappearing. Kids already are bailing out. I think it is being replaced by multiple platforms, as opposed to one behemoth. Snapchat, etc....

Re: A thread for random crap on the internet
I can somewhat see kids bailing, but potentially coming back down the road. I don't think the connection it provides for friends and families that don't get to see each other all the time has been fulfilled by any other platform - not saying it won't/can't be, though. If facebook collapses, it's going to be because another platform has replaced it that fulfills the current uses for facebook, along with additional uses that aren't currently implemented.

That's not what's happening with kids. It's not replacement, it's evolution beyond what Facebook is. They don't like it, so I doubt they are coming back.

They're likely just leaving because their parents are signing up and they don't want their parents to see the shirt they're up to.mr x wrote:That's not what's happening with kids. It's not replacement, it's evolution beyond what Facebook is. They don't like it, so I doubt they are coming back.

But what's happening now is the people who have been the biggest users treat it like the plague. The heavy first generation users have had enough from what I see. They want some privacy back.

Re: A thread for random crap on the internet
Key right there for the young crowd.Teenagers may shun Facebook for now but they almost all have accounts, which will be used more as their lives develop.
As for the older crowd, privacy is easily attained if folks would take the 10 minutes they spend bitching every time Facebook makes a small design change and invest it in exploring the privacy settings, we'd all be better for it. Facebook is easily locked down if you have half a brain. Mind you, as with any online service, privacy is a relative term.

That article is basically saying what Jeff and I were saying. The kids are leaving it, but will return once they're older and want to connect with their friends and family that they don't get to see all the time.
Directly from that article

I don't believe that. It's like saying that they will go back to MySpace, or an ex girlfriend. I don't believe my kids will ever go back. There's too many options going forward.

But myspace was replaced by facebook - it had the same functions as myspace, and then some. I think it would have to be the same situation for facebook to go away.mr x wrote:I don't believe that. Re: A thread for random crap on the internet
If family is there, there's a chance they will go back. I also don't think the Myspace parallel is equivalent to Facebook either. It was never embedded in as many peoples' live like Facebook.
Regardless, predictions at this point are just predictions, there isn't enough data available yet to show trends that might indicate that Facebook will fall. And saying that teens are leaving for instagram (in one of the articles) is a bit of a stretch considering FB owns all that data as well. Until I see FB making drastic moves toward user retention, I think they're likely just fine. They've got a shit load of smart people working there that are likely trying to map out similar trends and predictions.
